  1. We seem to have just flown by the 10th anniversary of TDM's 1.0 public release, which was on Oct. 18, 2009. I didn't see any threads on it (were there any I missed?), and now it's like 2 weeks past. But it feels like it's important enough that it's worth acknowledging anyway. So, Happy 10th Birthday TDM! Here's to 10 more of our favorite game in the shadows. Huzzah! o/"

  2. I know someone who plays all the TDM mods like a rabid religion and would love ?❤? to be a female VA. What does she need to do, simply?

  3. Here's my humble contribution, ladies and gents: http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Concept_Art_and_Fan_Art_Archive Take a trip down memory lane with some concept art. ? Still so many possibilities with this freeware project. Just like back in those wild days, when everything seemed both possible and uncertain at the same time, I feel we've still only scratched the surface.

  4. I don't know if there's anything that we could release that really works and that's going to get worked on. But when Thief 1 or 2 turned 10, TTLG held a "10th Anniversary Contest". That might be a good idea. In the TTLG version, people were encouraged to make a OM-like mission. We can sort of do that too, make a small mission like that first generation of TDM missions. Anyway, small missions usually get more entries and are more fun to play in line for a contest. And come to think of it we haven't had a contest in a long time.

  5. Nope, I wasn't around back in those days. I just noticed that there were some author tags on the files they were asking from and put two and two together. I'm certainly not the leading authority on that, by your description it seems like Schatten might be the one to talk to try and discern who should be credited for what. Personally I think it's way too much of a minefield to try and navigate through and think it's easier to just keep everything as it is, non-commercial. But if someone really wanted to try and track down permission, I guess the authors attached to the tracks would be a good starting place. They could at least confirm if they want to give their permission, or offer up any extra info on who else worked on the song.

Story: Build Time: Thanks: Download: In the in-game downloader, when it's back up* or at the following locations: Dropbox http://darkmod.taaaki.za.net/fms/lhl.pk4 http://fidcal.com/darkuser/missions/lhl.pk4 http://www.southquarter.com/tdm/fms/lhl.pk4 *right now the mission server is down, which means you will need to manually download and install this mission. Download the pk4 file from dropbox above, and place it in your folder called LhL inside your "fms" folder in your TDM install directory. Let me know if you run in to problems! 7. Quite the challenge in the title, right ? Well, as long as it is not difficult to implement into the base game, I think we should finally resolve this particular collection of missing assets. In recent years, I've come across several FM makers clamouring for being able to make an FM with a female thief protagonist for a change. If we find someone willing to do the female player vocal set, I think it should be someone who can affect a voice that sounds neither too youthful or too old. That's, IMHO, key. The player character's male vocal set already sounds like it could belong to any deeper-voiced guy between 20 and 50. I have started this new thread in order to finally organise an effort to create a female vocal set. That's one of the few stumbling blocks left for more original protag creation, IMHO. Some three, maybe even four years ago, Lavender took a brave stab at this - if memory serves me right, she actually finished her recordings for the entire PC vocal set, they just weren't processed and suitable yet for publication. However, as Lavender has left the forums, we're basically back to square one. I think we should look into contacting the female voice actors we already have here on the forums and doing an assessment of their voice acting samples. There's got to be at least two ladies with an appropriate voice range for the female vocal set. I think women voice actors in their 30s, with a wide enough voice range, would definitely suffice for what is needed in that vocal set. Bear in mind that the entire vocal set is actually non-verbal, so there is no need to articulate anything. The whole set consists of a voice doing sighs, or noises during physical exertion (e.g. climbing, lifting), and so on and so forth. Though there are dozens of these purely vocal "lines", it's not that long a list, so the vocal set can be completed in a fairly short amount of time. The selected voice actor could do the whole thing in a day or two (or several days), we could then filter through the various takes, select the best ones, have our sound guys help with cleaning up any audio issues, and we could then work on implementing the whole thing as an alternate vocal set. It would be a really nice (if relatively minor) addition for 2.08. Particularly for mission builders. I'd like to hear everyone else's thoughts on how we should proceed, who can provide oversight for the effort, and so on. 8. A long, long time ago, I started working on the script for a "Schemer" character; someone who could work as a sophisticated crime boss, corrupt merchant or sinister nobleman. Someone who is a bit like Ramirez from Thief, Edmund Blackadder (although only as comic as TDM in general), or a Shakeaspeare villain - erudite, a bit pretentious, and rotten to his core. We have a few noble sets, but this is a niche that I believe still deserves filling. It is quite hard to write a full vocal set, so it took years to complete, but it is here now, and I submit it for your consideration and feedback.

  9. I often wonder if I came around at a dark time in the mod’s lifespan, what with the aforementioned fallout, and recent technical struggles with the site. Im still super newb at mapping and have yet to put my first map out. But from a mapper’s perspective, I’ve beta tested here and there and talked to a few folks about help with things in my own map and seeing all the great new maps since January, this mod seems to have a very steady heartbeat. There’s always people working in the shadows to bring us more fun content. I tell everyone I know who’s even the least little bit interested in gaming, about TDM. Raise your black jacks high everyone, here’s to another exciting decade! Some stats would be interesting to see tho, like maps published by month over the years.

  10. Good news ! Shadow Creepr wrote back, she's interested. We have our first VA candidate for this little project. Now I'd need someone's help here at the forums, with uploading a 3,5 MB zip onto dropbox, or a similarly safe cloud storage space. I don't have a db account and I don't really want to start one, so if anyone is willing, maybe they could share their storage space for those 3,5 megs for a few weeks ? I'd like to send SC the link to the zip in a few days, just to strike while the iron is hot. Obviously, we'll try several VA's recordings for the vocal set, just to be on the safe side. The more contributors we get, the better. (I'm aiming for 3-4 at least, hopefully we'll have enough good recordings to choose from.) And as for involving SC and other VAs who might have previously lent their talents to Thief FMs, we might even recruit their talent for future TDM needs. I've seen several people complain in recent years that it's occassionally difficult finding a female VA if someone needs some dialogue by ladies in their FM, so knowing about people willing to help out on a more regular basis could be helpful. I think we should value all the voice acting talent we can get, especially if the quality is clearly good.

  11. This is something we could use as an advertisement, aside of maybe more transparent mission selection page: a grid of big thumbnails, name + very short description. Any picture-based web page layout, like Pinterest, have this attractiveness of picking over in a supermarket. You just rolling forward, not knowing what you want until your eye catch something. And you will forgot what you saw two minutes ago, so there is a replay value in it. There could even be multiple entries for the same mission with different screenshots - you don't know what mission exactly you are picking, you just see a cool image. An interactive gallery of all screenshots from all missions reshuffled - every image with short description of the mission and a hyperlink.

  12. I think a good early step would be if someone uploaded a zipped version of the pk4 that contains the player's vocal set. To dropbox or a similar reliable cloud service, it's only about 3,5 MB in size. We could then share the link with interested voice actors (if they don't already have TDM on their computer). They could download the zip version, unzip it and listen to the audio files, to get a bit of an idea what the male equivalent sounds like, in addition to the instructions for the VS, as linked to at the end of my previous post. I've taken a look at whether BrokenArts or RedLeaf (both over at TTLG.com) would be available to help. I'm a bit apprehensive, though. Both are great, but they've already done plenty of work for us in the past, and I think they'd both deserve a rest from VA contributions to TDM. Either of them could still try if they'd be interested, though. From the latest posting history I've seen, BrokenArts probably has other duties at the moment and probably wouldn't be available anyway. (We could try and contact her, but who knows if she has time.) RedLeaf seems to be more available, her currently last visits to TTLG were just the previous month, so maybe she could find some time in the near future, if she'd be interested. Concerning the rest of TTLG, I have revisited the Available voice actors thread and looked around for any potentially available VAs. I've already contacted Shadow Creepr, one of the VAs recommended in the opening post of that thread, but not RedLeaf yet, as I'm not sure whether to contact her. I might, though. Just don't want to contact too many people at once. Of the newer VA talent we know about here on the TDM forums, I'll try to contact Molly, just to ask whether she's still doing VA and would have some interest. If you know about any other female VAs who offered their help here on the forums, but I forgot about them, tell me. I'm all ears.

  13. I love to see an map-contest, but running such a contest, takes time. How about selecting some great existing missions, using a user-poll with the existing missions list and let the users vote for their 3 or 4 favourite missions, to put it in the "10th Anniversary collection edition". We got all the things we need for a online package, we only have to collect it. For example, i already tried to create a collection collection dvd. See topic:

  14. Thank you! Act 3 and Act 4 are both being developed simultaneously and are definitely coming. If I had to put a number on them I would say Act 3 in it's current iteration is about 70% done and Act 4 is about 90% done. I'm unsure when I will be releasing them as at the current rate i'll have Act 4 finished before Act 3. I have been tossing around the idea of a same day release for both of them, but I think having some breathing time between the two might be good as well, it just feels a bit silly to sit on a completed mission though. As for the assets, I agree that some of those should be put into core TDM, but ultimately that's not up to me. The very talented Epifire created the audiograph machines and the crumpled piece of paper, the custom footsteps were pulled from Kingsal's Volta missions. I agree that they all sound fantastic too. The loot sounds were created by myself.

  15. I hope that, as an orc, in the next Elder Scrolls, if it takes place in Hammerfell, you can reunite the Goblin-ken of Ogres, Orcs, Goblins, Gremlins, and the Troll warbeasts into a single hammer of Orsinium and Malacath.

  16. This was such a good FM. A few things felt a little exaggerated in contrast to part one, but overall the same remarkable quality and attention to detail. Quite a few funny secrets and easter eggs thrown in. Can't wait for for part three, I hope you plan on making one. Also I would suggest adding some of the unique assets in this mission to vanilla TDM, in case the ones I'm thinking of aren't already there (never seen them in any other mission). This includes the plague mask character, the voice recording machines with tubes, even the crumpled pieces of paper... the custom footstep and loot sounds also sound better than the default ones to be honest.

  18. Oops, I started researching fire elementals and replying before noticing the elemental discussion above was from four years ago. Sooo, I'll just post anyways in case anyone else was curious: fire elementals now work! Below is a screenshot from JackFarmer's "Hidden Hands: Initiation" mission (2018). As well, SH wrote in 2017: "Hopefully grayman's new fire elemental will see some use." And in 2018, JackFarmer wrote: "Yes, I can confirm (...) These creatures are fully functional...and they shoot on sight!"

  19. Not exactly true. "They didn't really care about copyright that much" is a pretty presumptuous statement. And, "If they didn't put any disclaimers in the metadata/properties of the file regarding who is the author, etc." assumes the composer of the music is some sort of professional who knew/knows how to do these things. TDM has/had some professionals working on it, sure; but some are/were amateurs, or with varying areas of expertise contributing in a variety of disciplines. "Most don't disclose their real name... this is equivalent to being anonymous" -- again, presumptuous. A composer using a pseudonym instead of their real name does not mean they want to sever all ties with their work, or are okay with the world using their creation however they want. There are plenty of artists (musicians, writers, actors, etc.) who don't use their real name. And when it comes to a game mod, maybe some artists just want some semblance of privacy; but if/when $$ enters the equation, or the loss of their work to someone else becomes possible, or their work might be used for something not agreed upon originally, of course they'd have a tendency to speak up. I'm 'case in point'. I contributed my audio to be used and re-used in the mod, within the mod, for free. I didn't authorize it or want it used for sale or re-sale, or for someone else to profit off of my work, or for use in other projects. That type of stuff is something I'd first want to be made aware of, to have a conversation about, and to have the opportunity to mull it over before deciding whether or not to allow. Had I not randomly stumbled upon this thread, I wouldn't have known one of my works was potentially being offered up for sale for non-Dark Mod usage, and someone else potentially being labeled the author. I still need to see what that 'underground_darkness' piece is; I may very well NOT be the composer, and probably am not; but I just want to make sure. But what if some composer other than Schatten did that piece or one of the others listed. Respectfully, the original composers may, similarly, want to know and weigh in; just as I would like to on my work. And *if* I didn't originally mention myself being the author in the metadata/properties of the original file -- or if that info didn't get transferred from my original file to the finalized file that someone else processed for eventual inclusion in the mod -- that's not me saying "I didn't really care about copyright that much." I just ask that you please don't try to speak for me or other artists, or put words in our mouths. You've been incorrect on every front so far when trying to represent my thoughts, my position, or my desires, I'm sorry to say. Just play it safe and don't assume the owners of the music files are who the file says it is, and don't assume the original artists think exactly like you do. Talk to the artists directly, which is what this thread aims to do and is what I wanted to make sure it does; which was the main reason for my initial post above. And if the original owner is not absolutely determinable and cannot be contacted for whatever reason, then don't use it. You know, this type of thing is why The Dark Mod is free and always has been; and why every instance of "you guys should sell TDM and profit from it" becomes a can of worms that eventually gets shut down. The original intent/spirit of the mod was not to sell it or the assets, and tracking down all the original owners who might lay claim to profits, and determining percent-outlays of cash, etc. would be a nightmare. In the end, it always seems to come back to the same mantra: "Leave the money out of it." It's the safest bet. In the case of the musical pieces, it might be the safer bet, as well.

  20. If they didn't put any disclaimers in the metadata / properties of the file regarding who is the author and do not specify that to nobody, anywhere, forever- that means they didn't really care about copyright that much. People use pseudonyms here anyway. Most don't disclose their real name. This is equivalent/analogic to being anonymous.

  21. Oh this is great news. I love that world and this is my favorite RPG since Skyrim, game of last year for me too. I don't know if it's as amenable to modding as Skyrim, but I hope people come up with some good stuff. I wanted to make a politics mod for Skyrim where you have to get support of all the jarls to make a bid at getting elected ruler, but maybe I can do that for KCD now.

  23. Not exactly, Cryengine is not a brush based engine like idtech 4, is a full mesh based engine, you make your terrain in the editor using the editor tools to sculpt the terrain and then you import meshes made in Blender, Modo, Maya, etc into the level editor to populate your world but nothing prevents you from making brushes in DR, then export those as a obj, but you would need to UV map and texture them in the previous mentioned tools. Cryengine editor is a tool set suited to make huge open worlds. Is possible to make small indoors levels but they are not build exactly like with DR. peter_spy Cryengine has visportals (portals and anti-portals) they are mostly used for the indoor sections. p.s - Forgot to mention Cryengine editor has a entire set of tools to build and edit box primitives (designer tool), you can think of them has brushes but they are in reality triangle meshes and work exactly like those in Blender for example. You can then edit and construct full structures like buildings using those, this tools are mostly used to "white box" a level before the real objects get imported but I've seen people build complex structures with it that stay in the final game.
