  1. This inspired me to download it again and get my butt kicked in the training missions
  2. HAHA I cannot believe i misquoted my own website. Wow.. (Ok. I corrected the original post. I would delete this reply if I knew how--sorry!)
  3. Happy Halloween! Long time lurker. My profile says 2008, but it's more like 2005. I must have locked myself out of my original login. Anyway, may I share a story with you all? (Just a couple pages, really) http://www.thedarketernity.net Before you flag me as spam, my link takes you to nothing more than a logo page and a very short manuscript inspired by "The Dark Mod." I actually have a handful more pages not yet posted that are quite a bit more "Thiefy" if anyone wants to read more. I'm not actively writing in it, but actually a different story that is also relevant that I hope to get to share with some of you eventually. For now, I just want to say, I am and always have been, inspired by the success of this project, the dedication, the organization, the cooperation and the end result--now, a beautiful stand-alone engine and game that surpasses the original "Thief" in so many ways. I would love any feedback, and hope to strike up enough of a conversation with this thread to let you all know what I'm really up to, which--again--is inspired by the game and the project of "The Dark Mod." Thanks for listening! Boo!
  4. Has anyone fully considered The Dark Mod for Machinima? I remember a dialog around co-op campains, and understand there might be a seperate project going on that. Is there such a thing as a relatively simple network capability that multiple players could interact in, without the requirement of missions or A.I.? I know it doesn't exist already, or at least there is no such interface. Even without that capability, how hard would it be to completely script out a story line with minimal interaction from the player--as in, you're a ghost observer, or family cat of a conventional 2 - 3 hour drama. Simple triggers, and aggressive prompts would move you through the plot, as you are not the protagonist nor antagonist, but the audience immersed in a professional quality 3D Film. This is what I think of when I imagine 3D Theater--not just someone wearing red and blue glasses--and I somehow always imagine it being Dark Mod. It's beautiful, visually, and hosts an enchanting universe for stories. Maybe I should have raised this point in '04 or '05, but I've mostly lurked. Since then, I am gaining experience making Machinima (jlguinn@yahoo.com if you want to know more about that) and have a story in progress (which I've already plugged in another topic). Is there any chance that Dark Mod is capabable of, and there would ever be enough interest in, building a Machinima project with it? Thanks for your thoughts on this, -Me
  5. Machinima Event in Charlotte Tuesday, Dec 7: Hey guys, Are there any Machinima (or education) fans in the Charlotte, N.C. area, who would like to meet another Thief/Dark Mod follower--like today (Dec. 7, 2010)? Sorry for the late notice, but it didn't occur to me until I was reading this http://www.bonevalleyfilms.com/publicuploads/MLKWOW/Machinima%20Vocabulary%20In%20Mr.pdf a student handout I plan to display at Citizens Schools WOW "What is Machinima?: Episode 2" Tuesday, December 7 MLK, Jr. Middle School Charlotte, North Carolina (6 p.m. - 8 p.m. or thereabouts). All of the apprenticeships hosted at the school will be presenting, as this is a public event. We'll be grouped with technology (Robotics, Google Sketchup, etc). We'll have a meet and greet table (I mentioned) and then screen our movie. This is my second year leading this apprenticeship with Citizen Schools (related news link below). You won't find last year's video (I hope), as we plan not to release our first three episodes until next fall when Episode 3 is created by next year's class. I should say, other than this handout I mentioned, The Dark Mod is not featured (we used Half Life 2 Deathmatch), but I've been following The Dark Mod since 2004, or before Doom 3 was released, it seems. I love the game and even dabbled with Dark Radiant a bit. I don't post much--I did bring up the subject of machinima in the other forum (search on www.thedarketernity.com--an unfinished story I would love to create in "The Dark Mod" one day). I haven't been so active on that story, of late, but ideas are welling up for "What is Machinima:Episode 3" next year, and we might be looking for collaborators! So, oh wow--I better get to bed so I can be on my game tomorrow :-) I probably will not revisit this forum before the event. Please e-mail qustions to jlguinn@yahoo.com (before 3:00 if it's about the event). Nebrekker - AKA Mr. Guinn This link is Citizen Schools (founded in Boston) on NBC Nightly News a few weeks ago--PLEASE NOTE: I'M IN CHARLOTTE, N.C.- http://blog.citizenschools.org/ctnation/2010/10/19/citizen-schools-makes-nbc-nightly-news/ I'll probably post links to our videos and other information about a year from now, like I said. Will try to remember to give a better notice on next year's event :-). Hope this is relevant enough to not be spam.
  6. "I Personally love this mod. There are so many features in it, and because it is a mod created by a community..." Here, here!

Other than the challenge of locating the DarkMod directory within Steam, no problems installing. Game performs great, so far. Installing Missions, challenge: My game starts with no installed missions. I must click a Mission, and the game restarts. Occassionally, the game fails to restart--being killed by a Windows 7 Task Manager pop-up. If the game restarts on its own, the mission works. Workaround for game crashing--keep launching it until it successfully restarts. I would imagine the desired behavior would be for games to remain installed. Perhaps I have a read-only folder or some other easy fix, available? 8. I'd like to participate as a story writer, and possibly voice acting. My mapping skills are confined to the tutorials, although my brother, nephew and best friend (not active members) are decent at mapping and modelling. I've mentioned in a seperate thread (The Dark Eternity) interest in creating a Machinima production. I still think that would be a powerful implementaion for for The Dark Mod, but my particular story has a long ways to go before it becomes production ready. I'll try not to spam this thread with that topic, other than to say you can view my work so far, and steal any ideas for better or worse (see afore-mentioned thread). It seems to me, the general message, here, is let's get moving in the same direction with a feasible campaign. That seems to begin with a fun and cohesive story line that fits in with the assets already in place. Maybe The Inventors could come in the latter part of Act II? Are we to the point where we could talk about how and where such a project would be hosted? How about some Wiki space for our outline and story draft, and start hashing out some ideas? Sorry if I'm getting ahead of myself. Just excited about The Dark Mod. P.S. I could, possibly, be taught to script AI.
  9. I feel like such a flunky! I just now played Patently Dangerous--not realizing it was yours, until I saw "demagogue" on the mission screen. After sneaking my way around the block I got caught trying to pick a door, and ended up hopping the start-level gate, just to escape trouble. Love the map so far! Will savor playing the rest of the map (no spoilers, please ) One time, I think I had to nudge AI along, as he was clearly walking into a wall until I made another noise to alert him. (Got that on FRAPS--one minute and some change if it would help you to see it). Oddly enough, such an event would even fit into my story--as something has to make our characters realize they're simply programmed actors in a video game universe. But I digress... I've dabbled enough with Dark Radiant only to somewhat appreciate how truly complex mapping is. In general, I'm very excited at the prospect of The Dark Mod being out there, and being so good--having come to fruition after so long in the making. This can only be the beginning! My contributions may be humble compared to the incredible work so far, but I hope to join in in some capacity.
  10. Seems to make sense. Independent projects that could specialize in various themes, with the hope of weaving a fan mission playlist that fits into a larger campaigne-worthy story? And would this/these project(s) run within The Dark Mod web space, or hosted elsewhere? Is such a project underway?
  11. Yes--The Dark Mod would make for wonderful machinima. The scripting option is encouraging. In fact, a completely scripted production could, theoretically, be viewed in-game--as if you're just a house cat wondering the alleyways as scripted AI interact, or simply a ghost--perhaps nudged by the director throughout the game toward key scenes on time to keep pace with a feature length motion picture. Even a basic FRAPS teaser trailer would be cool. But you're also correct that this is very ambitious, and even in mentioning the above, I feel I'm getting ahead of myself. I figure focus needs to be a great story, and mine is an early draft. Still, I wanted to put a bug in your ear and let you know I'm here. If anyone's able to make it through the prologue (about three pages) and into Chapter 1 or so, please let me know what you think. (Apologies in advance for a suddenly slow Wiki, which only started last night as I was making my original post. Hopefully that will clear up soon.) So, demagogue, what are your ideas you mentioned? Have you posted them?
  12. The Dark Mod is beautiful! Thank you for creating it! I discovered this site a number of years ago. Although I've not been a heavy contributor, to date, I've had in mind a story to be played out in this very universe. "The Dark Eternity" is an epic adventure of souls transcending The Afterlife, but within the universe defined by The Dark Mod. My dream for "The Dark Eternity" has always been a feature length Machinima Presentation in the steampunk universe inspired by The Looking Glass "Thief" series. This led me to "The Dark Mod," early in its development. I'm curious how The Dark Mod would lend itself to Machinima Production (in game noclip cheats, hiding of the gui, etc). I'm sure one show-stopper might be lack of network support, allowing multiple live actors, such as you can do in a deathmatch like Half Life 2 or Halo. That said, I'm still contributing my feeble efforts to write an immersive linear story that would apply perfectly to the environment of this game. I would appreciate any fellow fans of The Dark Mod to read a page or two of the draft (in progress) at www.thedarketernity.net. If the story catches your fancy, feel free to join in with a free Wiki account, just as you would do, here. I would enjoy any feedback on www.thedarketernity.net discussion boards, or here, or at my e-mail jlguinn@yahoo.com. Thanks, again, for a wonderful rendition of The Dark Mod! Nebrekker
  13. My $0.02. Two displays so the camera view gets it's own fullscreen monitor! This isn't the same as "Split View," mentioned previously, is it?
