  1. Given that this is a community developed game forum, I thought some of you would know of a good place to get a large pack of textures for free. I wouldn't be selling them or anything, they would strictly be for personal use. I'm talking about stuff like carpets, wallpaper/wood/stone/you name it. Any good references? Thanks
  2. It is only happening in the preview builds for now. It is an experimental feature, and they are likely testing the waters to see if they can get away with it/how much outrage there will be. EDIT: looks like they're aborting it, for now. https://betanews.com/2018/09/13/microsoft-quietly-stops-interfering-with-chrome-and-firefox-installations-on-windows-10/#comments

  4. And sadly, a GPU like that won't give you satisfactory FPS at 1920x1080. You'll either need to use 1280x720 or 1366x768, depending on what's supported by the display in order to get good game speed.
  5. Not a problem. Is this a fresh install of Dark Mod, or have you ever played the game before and possibly changed a setting that broke something? What kind of hardware are you using, specifically video hardware? You can right-click the start button, go to system, device manager, and display adapters to find out. Maybe you need an updated driver or something.
  6. Sounds like the resolution is screwed up, or the game is using a resolution that the display really doesn't like. You can pull down the console with ctrl+alt+` and then enter the following commands to change it, assuming you can't see well enough to do it with the conventional choices on the menu. r_customwidth 1920 r_customheight 1080 r_mode -1 The first two set the desired resolution, substitute them with numbers you want. The last one sets the game to use a custom resolution, which you defined above. Finally, type vid_restart and press enter to apply the changes.
  7. I put the ancient sticker on the new computer build, and the new sticker on the one with ancient parts inside, so that if a thief breaks in who knows about computers, he'll steal the wrong (old) one, instead of the good one. Ryzen is running in a 16 year old case with an Athlon XP sticker on it... lol

Dumb thief: if its shiny and feels modern, he steals it. Smart thief: looks inside the case and steals it.

And if he has a magical back like in TDM, he will probably steal both. And any sylverware he can find ;)

they'll spend 2 to 4 minutes taking what they can sell then leave. If its too big or heavy they wont take it.

  8. Encoded ~2,100 flac songs to opus in 10 minutes on this 8-core system. :)

It could be made to go even faster though. If I could offload the flac decoding onto the graphics card and just use the CPU for the Opus encoding, that would speed things up some more. There is a FLAC encoder/decoder for the GPU floating around...

As good as lossless FLAC can be, you probably aren't going to hear a difference between it and 256-320 kbps MP3. So my question is: What was the Opus bitrate?

128k. It is for use on a cell phone, and it sounds great for being only 128k (Opus is amazing).

  9. I'm a Google Hangouts man myself. Why? Free calls to and from PSTN in the USA. Every other service charges for this. They even give you a phone number! Do you have a reference for the Skype thing?

Come visit Moldova. We have unlimited bandwith and unlimited internet traffic for a fixed price (something like 15 $ per month).

Oh yes, these "strict limits" on bandwidth in America are nothing but marketing at work. Tel-Cos make money hand over fist, to the point that they could easily provide us all with quality and affordable service. My guess is they spend more money paying off politicians and on coke than they do improving the networks they run.

Anyway, Verizon should be prosecuted for "interfering with emergency services", and sued by everyone who was affected by the fire.

  10. I was watching a documentary the other day about a serial killer, and when there was a reenactment of him pulling a knife and the documentary used the sound the TDM guards make when they unsheath their weapon, it made me laugh.
  11. Well one thing we can all agree on is that in the event that this task is undertaken, we call the new version Dark Mod Forever, in homage to a certain alien blasting game that switched engines multiple times during development.
  12. It would be more productive to get donations and then hire someone to upgrade our engine. That way we don't break everything the community has worked on, and we don't end up using features exclusive to Windows, or stuck with requiring a service like Steam/Origin, something that many proprietary game frameworks now require.
  13. In missions, I would like to see more grass in open, outside areas. Surely we can do that? There was a great looking demo map produced a wile ago with a grassy hill overlooking a river, with a building on the other side. The cheapest way to do grass is to just use alpha planes with a texture mapped onto them.
  14. Impressive that someone can produce something as wonderful as this as their first mission. Well done!
  15. Even if it could be done over night, for free, I'd rather TDM stick with Doom 3 anyway than switch to yet another proprietary engine that will never be open source. The people who made TDM made all the right decisions. In addition to avoiding corporate politics, an open source engine ensures that the game can be pushed as far as the community desires. This is running on an engine from 1993.
  16. Microsoft's little update-blocking stunt affected Windows 8.1 users too, even while the Windows 8.1 product was still in mainstream support, something they should have been sued for. Hilariously, it also backfired and affected machines that weren't of the Ryzen/Kaby Lake generation. https://windowsreport.com/microsoft-banned-intel-processors/ After all of Microsoft's bad behavior to get Windows 10 adoption, they then posted a phony apology in order to gloat in everyone's face that they aren't going to be punished in any way. https://www.ubergizmo.com/2016/12/microsoft-admits-aggressive-windows-10-campaign/ Consumers can force Microsoft to extend Windows 7 support if they refuse to abandon Windows 7 for the spyware/adware cesspool that is Windows 10. Consumers have done this before, forcing Microsoft to extend both Windows 98 and XP support. But me personally, I'm done with Microsoft. I don't support them or their products in any way now.
  17. I know you asked about laptops, but have you ever thought about building an mini-ITX machine? They can get really small. I built one that fits in a backpack for traveling. Unlike a laptop, they are easy to upgrade like a desktop computer is. And the parts are cheaper than laptop parts. Only downside is that you can't whip it out on a train or plane and start working, because it requires a monitor and AC power, but thanks to phones I can't remember the last time I did that with a laptop anyway. Unlike a laptop, you can also build to your exact specifications/desires. Getting Windows 7 to work on modern hardware will be a bitch. Microsoft is deliberately making it this way, even going out of their way to sabotage people who manage to pull it off. https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/04/19/chap_fixes_microsofts_windows_7_and_8_update_block_on_new_cpus/ I look at it as just another reason to stick to using Linux.
  18. I can't speak for anyone other than myself, but fuck Bethesda. Not only did they ruin id, by ceasing to provide Linux ports of games, which is something that id always did until new management took over, but they're also pulling this. Will never support them, that's for sure.

  22. Mentioned and linked to TDM on a forum and two guys said they're gonna check it out. :)
