    2016+ CPU/GPU News

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/05/04/nvidia_gpp_axed/ Remember that time these guys passed off 3.5 GB video cards as 4 GB? Yes, the 970 does come with 4 GB, but the last segment of memory is crippled, making performance drop significantly when compared to a real 4 GB video card once a program dips into that memory region. So, labeling these as 4 GB cards was a blatant scam, since they won't match up to rival 4 GB cards when pushed to the limit.
  2. Again, I never cared for the Sega Genesis sound hardware that much, but this is a pretty damn good rendition of Billie Jean.
  3. Great mod, loads of fun. It modernizes Doom, but in a good way. Two things I would like to request. 1. sounds for waterfalls/liquid falls. It is nice that there are sounds for torches now, but it seems a bit strange when near a waterfall and there is no sound. Surely surfaces with flowing textures could be tagged to play a rushing sound. 2. Cyberdemon should be a bit tougher, at least against the BFG. He's supposed to be a bad-ass and instill fear in the player, so it feels kind of too easy to paste him with 2-3 BFG blasts. Thanks
  4. Brazil prosecutors say Windows 10 settings violate local laws https://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/25/reuters-america-brazil-prosecutors-say-windows-10-settings-violate-local-laws.html
  5. @OrbWeaver, is the system going into suspend mode? Some Linuxes have trouble waking up on certain hardware.
  6. Why is tax charged on a used item that's being sold as refurbished? Isn't that double-dipping? It reminds me of MS and the way they wanted to force every Xbox user to go online so that they and game publishers could extort money out of people when they resell games.

HMRC over here are now trying that crap on with private sellers on ebay, amazon etc. When you sales got above a certain amount your deemed a business.

  7. The system does automatic discovery and assembly. You just plug the enclosure in, and it detects both drives and configures the mirror. If one drive fails, it will not mount until you explicitly use the "degraded" option (so there's no need to worry about a silent disk failure). Then, you add a new disk to the array and delete the missing one. As the data balances to the new drive in the background, the file system is still online and usable, albeit with slower performance since there is read contention on the first drive... and it only mirrors the occupied space. Another advantage of this system is that it does data integrity checking on the fly across drives. Whenever you write files, it creates checksums of the data on each disk. And if one drive disagrees with the other about what the contents of a file are, it will automatically fix the problem, since it knows the correct checksum. Conventional RAID systems and file systems like ntfs don't do this.
  8. I like using an external solution because of portability. And the RAID is all done in software by the OS, so it'll work on anything with a USB port. Of course you need USB3 though or else it is extremely slow.
  9. Always fun to see people push things further than they were designed to go... frame rate is very good, but he's "cheating", by using a custom made cartridge with a more powerful processor that's doing the work. Many old console games worked this way; shipping with co-processors to augment the system. Impressive skills either way.
  10. Currently using the Ryzen 7 1700 system with an Asrock AB350 Gaming K4 board in it.
  11. This is probably not an award you want the developer of your operating system to win... https://bigbrotherawards.de/en/2018/technology-microsoft-germany
  12. Nope, there's no warranty. I found one which is made by a different brand, though it is extremely similar in design. I don't need RAID logic in the enclosure, because I use software RAID mirroring on Btrfs. https://www.amazon.com/HornetTek-X2-U3-Enclosure-Shielded-Included/dp/B00D05DIFQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1524409919&sr=8-1&keywords=hornettek+enclosure
  13. I think I'm just going to order another enclosure. It's only $45.
  14. Funny glitch in this game: There is an enemy next to a half-way checkpoint. If you get the checkpoint, but you don't kill the enemy, then, whenever you respawn, the enemy kills you instantly, over and over again. You're screwed. lol
  15. Yep, tried a different USB cable and different HDDs. Like I said, wish I could check the port with a multimeter, but I don't have one.
  16. I built a RAID-1 array in one of these. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817392054&cm_re=nexstar_mx-_-17-392-054-_-Product Except I'm using the older model, without eSATA, only USB3. It used to work fine, but now it only connects at USB2 speeds. I tried different cables and different PCs and the problem persists. Since USB2 is already a bottleneck when transferring data to an HDD, and since there are two HDDs in there, meaning that everything needs to be sent down the wire twice, it makes performance even shittier than a USB2 enclosure would be. I tried cycling between JBOD mode and spanned mode with extra disks and that didn't solve the problem. One observation I made is that the indicator LEDs flash to indicate the connection speed. They flash slow when on USB2, and they flash fast when in USB3 mode. When I cycled modes (an operation that takes place inside the enclosure itself), the lights flashed quickly as they do when on USB3 speed. So now I'm wondering if the female USB3 plug on the rear of the enclosure is damaged and only the leads for USB2 are making contact. If only I had a volt meter, I could test the solder points on the rear of the PCB in the enclosure against the other end of the USB cable and ensure that they are all working.
  17. Good thing game physics aren't more like reality. Imagine if it took multiple water arrows just to douse a pesky flame.
  18. You could crank out fat characters or whatever you desire with Makehuman. They come rigged and all. Of course making good textures would still be a challenge.
  19. New dentist tried to scam me by claiming I need EIGHT fillings. Old dentist says none are needed after viewing same x-rays. If new one had said only 2, I would have just believed him...

What makes you think it was a scam, and not just a dentist with different standards?

The dentist who says I need none has been in business for over 30 years and is a well reviewed/5 star dentist. The one who says I need 8 has only been here two years or so. 8 was such an alarming number that I did some research online and I found that this scenario isn't that uncommon.

I take care of my teeth, flossing daily. The other guy online was quoted the same extreme number out of the blue when he tried a new dentist. Ultimately I can't be 100% sure it's a scam because I can't interpret the slides, but a 0 to 8 disagreement is so big that something's not right.

    Thief Gold

Did you know about this? Pretty funny... They fixed it in New Dark, though it will work in a vanilla game install. Also, it won't work in vanilla T2, which implies that Looking Glass found out about it and fixed it during T2's development.
  21. Modern CPUs, anything past the Sandy Bridge, tend to come with an instruction called AES_NI. This is hardware acceleration of encryption/decryption, so that everything doesn't need to be done by software. Some programs (Veracrypt definitely does) take advantage of this, and some don't.

    Thief Gold

Thief 1/Gold had the best atmosphere IMO. I love the background sound, the vocal work, etc.
  23. Veracrypt is good, free and open source. If you are serious about this you really should encrypt the whole OS installation, because chunks of sensitive data can end up in e.g. the swap file or temp files outside of the encrypted area otherwise. Veracrypt can do this as well, and at startup, you are prompted to enter the password before booting. If you feel that it takes too long to unlock, the solution is to lower the PIM iterations count. This will decrease security somewhat, but if you are up against a truly skilled/coercive adversary like a government, you're screwed anyway. It will definitely protect you from the average thief even with a lower PIM. And yes, you can change the password/PIM without needing to re-encrypt the thing. This works by using a layer of abstraction. It generates a strong key to encrypt the data, and then it encrypts that key with the password of your choice. So if you change the password, they just re-encrypt the key without needing to generate a new key and it will still unlock the same volume as before.
