Amazing models Epifire!

To get my hands dirty with Substance Painter i'm creating a victorian period inspired radiator.

I used Blender for modeling and in the picture below you can see the normal mapped lowpoly sitting at 2126 tris inside SP.

Need to watch the Painter tutorial videos next and then i'll be off to texturing.

Good model, but a little anachronistic for our setting.

Didn't they have radiators in the Victorian era? I would certainly expect to see such a thing in an expensive manor with electric lights.

Nice looking model.

They are from the victorian era and they look like this

Which is very close to the model, as long as it's textured correctly I could see it fitting in with everything else.

Yes, radiators were introduced around 1880, see here for additional references: Link

I have spotted them in Thief-fms and since they were using steam or hot water, i assumed they would also fit in the steampunk part of the darkmod for use in homes of the wealthy.

Next time i'm gonna ask before to be sure.

Yes, 1880 is a little late for our setting, especially when it's something that still in modern use.

That's later than vaccuums, typewriters and coal-powered motorcycles.

So much for my long-awaited dodgem-themed level.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

There's nothing wrong with some kind of steam-powered heating system, but it shouldn't look like the same radiator you could find in houses today.

Actually, Wikipedia seems to think radiators originated in 1855, and in the US in the 1860's. I don't know if that's still too late for TDM's setting, but given we have both steam and electricity, I feel it wouldn't be too out of place in the home of some hyper-rich noble with ties to the Inventor's Guild, but that's just my two cents. Still, I understand how it might be out of place.

Nice work on the model, though!

Anything invented in the 1800s has to be handled carefully, though the actual date of invention is less important than how it looks (top hats are older than 1800 but wouldn't fit our setting either).

The general rule is that you don't want things that look distinctively modern, but there's nothing wrong with making modern-ish things that look like they're made of steampunk parts.

Coal powered motorcycles existed in real life?! Who would have thought TDM would teach me things I never knew about history.

For my maps I don't mind breaking the barrier a little bit and I wouldn't see a problem with a heater provided it had the right textures of course.

I know in a lot of Thief2 FM's they have very modern items like modern day toilets and so on however I find it usually breaks immersion a bit too much and sticks out like nuts on a bull.

But a little immersion breaking wouldn't hurt and I don't really see those heaters being out of place myself. What sort of heaters did you have in mind Springheel?

Perhaps something like a warm air stove would be more appropriate?

Failing that, the Romans actually had central heating with hypocausts, which are pretty neat.

Different people are bothered by it to differing degrees. Some people wouldn't be bothered by modern toilets. I personally found the typewriters and desk fans in Thief 4 extremely damaging to my suspension of disbelief.

I don't quite understand the question. I didn't have any heaters in mind...?

Sorry I meant did you have a better alternative in mind with the heaters or would you just be flat out opposed to them bar the steampunk creations you mentioned in a previous post.

Anachronistic, yes. Modern, no.

The more modern the technology is, the more effort should be put into making it look 'old fashioned'. While the steambeasts of the Inventor's Guild are clearly sophisticated robots, making them appear to be made of old fashioned gears, boilers and clockwork machinery allows them to fit into the steampunk setting. A robot that *looked* sophisticated--highly polished, no obvious working parts--would not. A normal gage might look too modern, but if it used an old-fashioned clock-hand for a needle and roman numerals, suddenly it seems to fit the setting.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
