Windows 7: Disable Desktop Composition Greyed Out

Recommended Posts

I've noticed a few others with this issue and I'm wondering if there is anything that can be done about it?

When I right click on either the shortcut or the DarkRadiant.exe, the options to disable the Desktop Composition is greyed out. I've actually gone into the registry to disable this on Dark Radiant, but the commands are ignored in there as well. From what I've read on the net, this means something is hard coded into Dark Radiant to prevent it from being run with those settings.

The settings work great on other programs, so I'm not sure what is going on. Might be worth mentioning that all the options are available on the tdmlauncher exe. Is it possible for us to hard code DR to run without Windows Themes?

Don't know if it's something that can be fixed but i just wanted to put it out there.

I'm now running everything on my new laptop. Windows 7, 4gigs ram, and dedicated Nvidia graphics with 512megs of ram.

The composition can be disabled on the x86 version. Greebo reported he can also disable it on the self compiled x64 version, but I can't confirm that. It didn't work for me. I hope we'll be able to fix this eventually as well.

I have given greebo a link to the patch that ufo-radiant uses to disable desktop composition, I think that if DR could at least have an option to disable it in the options, it would help a lot. As far as I know the application can disable it even if the option is greyed out. At the moment it seems to hit nvidia+x64 users the most, but AMD does not currently accelerate things like line drawing as they said it will cause more problems and provide little to no performance benefit... but now that nvidia has called them out about that it will most likely accelerate them and result in these issues spreading ;/

Interesting. Yeah, I just installed the x86 version and it does indeed work. Could there be some kind of permissions issue getting passed along in the 64bit version I wonder? If I couldn't even over ride it through the registry, then it seems like something is being cooked right into the program itself.

I read something about some programs having an internal manifest that greys out those settings for some reason, making it impossible to over ride them.

If greebo's self compiled version works, it seems like maybe it could be a user rights issue.

The desktop composition option doesn't do anything for me either here (Debug build x64), but I never needed it until yesterday - which is when I updated my nvidia drivers to fix the Doom 3 fullscreen flickering issue. The D3 flickering is gone, but now I'm having a blank/white 3D and orthoview until I click into it once.

I'll check out the code Serpentine linked for me.

Sweet. :)

Thank you so much, I've had the greyed out compatibility options since I switched to Win7. Even manually setting the registry keys didn't work.

EDIT: Works better than I thought it would, excellent thank you!

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
