TDM Beginners Contest

If anyone is really offended by Shadowhides comments then you just have yourself to blame. Whenever I read one of his silly posts I just roll my eyes and move on to the next post. Lifes too short to worry about such irrelevent things. I see we have nearly a page of people argueing with Shadowhide. I'm sure he's very happy with all the attention he's getting. So can people just ignore his posts in this thread? This thread is supposed to be for beginners to share ideas and veterans to to offer encouragement. Can we keep it that way please?

@SeriousToni: Do you want me to add your friend to the list of particpants?

Welcome, jysk! :D

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

Welcome jysk

convert to fucn_static everything that doesn't sealing visportals and the void

and dont forget to monsterclip your func_static's

Sometimes you get better performance if you don't convert everything. Sometimes you need those extra brushes to cut the geometry into smaller tris so not as many lights hit them.

func_staticing will save some tris, maybe small performance gain.

Minimizing how many lights hit tris can be a large performance gain.

It's a situation by situaion deal. If your performance is bad use r_showlights 1. If you have a lot of white tris, they are the ones that need split more. (teal too)

I created a few new textures, but I don't know where to put them exactly:

Should I put them in the standard directories (e.g. textures/stone/mytexture) or is it legitim to put them in

textures/serioustoni/mytextures?

I created a new .mtr file as well.

EDIT: And can I find out, when I get "SHADER NOT FOUND" in the Media Browser, which part is exactly missing? (right click > show material info; doesn't help) Because it works for some textures and for some not, though I can't find the error.

Could someone please look over this? I made some fabric textures and some wood textures. The fabrics work good but the wood ones are allways "shader not found". I don't see why.

      @TheUnbeholden
You cannot receive PMs. Could you please be so kind and check your mailbox if it is full (or maybe you switched off the function)?

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).

Well then, it's been about a week since I released my first FM and I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised by its reception. I had expected half as much interest in my short little FM as I received and even less when it came to positive feedback, but I am glad that the aspects of my mission that I put the most heart into were often the most appreciated. It was also delightful to read plenty of honest criticism and helpful feedback, as I've already been given plenty of useful pointers on improving my brushwork, level design, and gameplay difficulty.
I've gotten back into the groove of chipping away at my reading and game list, as well as the endless FM catalogue here, but I may very well try my hand at the 15th anniversary contest should it materialize. That is assuming my eyes are ready for a few more months of Dark Radiant's bright interface while burning the midnight oil, of course!
