[solved] malloc failure upon starting any new game

If you set image_downsize "1" it will lower the resolution of the diffuse textures.

If the seta image_downSizeLimit is set to "1024" with image_downsize set to "1" any

diffuse texture over 1024x1024 will be shrunk to 1024x1024. That is the smallest

size you can set before the background menu becomes blurry.

You can try the settings I suggested above with seta image_downSize "0" to ensure

that the diffuse textures are not shrunk at all. Then, those changes wont allow the

map to load, try enabling it again ( "1" ) and set the image_downSizeLimit to "1024".

You can shrink the bumps, specular or diffuse ... any choice you wish.

The lease impact on image quality would be to shrink the specular.

That's a lot of trial and error, but I will try. Thank you very much.

You mention bumps, specular or diffuse, but if I understand well these are texture-related.

The thing that annoys me is the "map" in the player's inventory. Does this belong to one of these category ?

The map is "Diffuse".

Anything that is "painted-on" and does not react to lighting is generally "diffuse" you can traditionally say this it the texture.

Bump-map or Normal-Map is a special texture that simulates surface rough-ness or shapes, they are made visible via the light interaction.

Specular is a special texture that controls how "shiny" a surface is. Some surfaces might have a pure white (full shine) texture other

may have gray (medium shine) and others black (no shine at all). Some surfaces have various shades of white, black and gray to show

variations in shine. Finally there is colored specular that can produce the rainbow shine effect that you see in a water puddle with oil

in it or the look of pearl (This is rarely used.).

Diffuse: All the full colour textures that you see is a diffuse.

Whether they are downsized or not is controlled by:

image_downsize "1" or "0" = on or off.

You control the limit of your downsize with:

image_downSizeLimit

Bumps: All of the depth and detail you see are bump textures.

Whether they are downsized or not is controlled by:

image_downsizebump "1" or "0" = on or off

You control the limit of your downsize with:

image_downSizebumpLimit

Speculars: All of the shiny or wet looking detail are specular textures.

Whether they are downsized or not is controlled by:

image_downsizespecular "1" or "0" = on or off

You control the limit of your downsize with:

image_downSizeSpecularLimit

So, for example if you have

image_downsize 1 and

image_downSizeLimit 64

Your diffuse textures (menu textures, maps, doors, floors, everything really) will be downsized to 64 x 64 sized textures.

Set image_downsize 0 and the feature is turned off.

The largest textures by far are the bump textures, so that's why we suggest turning downsize on for them and not the other textures.

The best way to start is to downsize the "bumpmaps". These do not impact the menu (it basically only uses diffuses), so the menu does not get blurry. And they are also very big. the speculars are usually not used or quite tiny. So:

* image_downSize - saves the most memory, but makes menu blurry

* image_downSizeSpecular - saves very little memory, does not impact menu

* image_downSizeBump - makes fine details (like bumps, dimples, cracks etc) in the game blurry, but still saves a lot of memory and does not impact the menus

I'd suggest you try this one first with "512" and then if that does not help "256" as value. Sotha reported good results with "512".

Wow, thanks guys!

Seems I've got a new objective ;) very interesting...

OK, I've done all kinds of tests and it seems that:

seta image_downSize "1"

seta image_downSizeLimit "512"

is the necessary and sufficient condition to be able to play In the North for me (2GB RAM + 1GB Video RAM).

Any bigger limit will give me the "malloc error" even with bumps to 128 and specular to 64.

I can live with that...

  • 2 years later...

Win XP might be your issue. Try image downsizing and make sure texture compression is enabled.

Bloody bah, and bah again!

So used to playing on the main PC I forgot the gfx card in this PC only had 1gb of ram, so re-reading this thread I applied the following settings to my autoexec.cfg file -

seta image_downSizeLimit "512"
seta image_downSize "1"
seta com_videoRam "1024"

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
