New Website images

Many of the website images are heavily out of date. I'd like to replace at least half of them with new images from 1.08 maps, but don't have any hi res images to work with. Anyone feel like playing tourist in St. Lucia, The Training Map or In the North and taking some hi res pictures of impressive scenes? Stuff with AI would be good.

@MD has a point. Tasks like that are a good thing for fans to feel like they're part of the action. I'll look out for some good screenshots to take while I'm playing though.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Please bear in mind that when making those screenshots, the graphics quality should be at a maximum. This means full shaders, moderate bloom (as a compromise between the 'I hate bloom' and the 'I can't live without bloom' factions), and of course massive anti-aliasing.

My Eigenvalue is bigger than your Eigenvalue.

@simplen00b, I like a few of those pictures (especially the last one: the "In the North" kitchen with two people in "idle" animations), but there's some bad jpg artifacts showing up on them that make them hard to use.

Does anyone know if min.us (like google used to) auto-compresses every jpeg image?

[Edit:] Oh, just a note for AMD card owners, don't forget that ATI catalyst can turn up massive anti-aliasing. My old middle-of-the-road HD4850 1GB goes up to 8x edge-detection for an similar effect as 24x (!).

Cool.

@MD - I've just downloaded one of the pix from Minus and it's exactly the same number of bytes as the original screenshot. So I guess it's to do with how TDM is saving the screenshots rather than anything Minus is doing. Is there a way of getting it to save screenshots in png or tiff format?

EDIT: OK, I've been a noob - TDM was saving screenshots as 99% jpegs, but I was then resaving them (without checking the jpeg settings) as 85% jpegs.   However, have also worked out how to save screenshots as pngs (via changing the seta r_screenshot_format setting to "png", if anyone else is interested).

For future reference, what's the best format to offer screenshots?

PNG images are losslessly, so for future reference they are the best way. To put them actually on a website, a 85% or 90% JPG is better (smaller). So best send in PNGs, and Spring can then resize/compressed them for the web.

Jay suggests a screenshot competition - mayhaps over at the TTLG FM fora where there are actually more than 6 people. Or at RPS or Sneaky Bastards.

Jay also suggests that technical details matter much less than how awesome the screenshot looks - which has far more to do with colour, contrast, composition and such. The minimum technical bar should be pretty low I reckon. Someone who does a lot of screenies for Thief/TDM might be able to put a little primer on how to tweak for darkness etc. I don't do photoshop, but I'd happily do one for GIMP that was woolly enough to be transferable to other graphics packages - though these day's the hip kids probably use web apps for that sort of thing.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).

Well then, it's been about a week since I released my first FM and I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised by its reception. I had expected half as much interest in my short little FM as I received and even less when it came to positive feedback, but I am glad that the aspects of my mission that I put the most heart into were often the most appreciated. It was also delightful to read plenty of honest criticism and helpful feedback, as I've already been given plenty of useful pointers on improving my brushwork, level design, and gameplay difficulty.
I've gotten back into the groove of chipping away at my reading and game list, as well as the endless FM catalogue here, but I may very well try my hand at the 15th anniversary contest should it materialize. That is assuming my eyes are ready for a few more months of Dark Radiant's bright interface while burning the midnight oil, of course!
