I was just looking at Mod DB and I see that Nbohr has listed my latest FM as part of the Unusual Gameplay Contest. It's not actually supposed to be an entry. I can see why Nbohr might have thought it was as it does have some surreal and whacky architecture and exhibits inside the museum. That been said, if you guys think it meets the criteria of the contest then I don't mind entering it. The only problem is that my poll hasn't been set up to reflect that of the Unusual Contest. To be honest I don't really care about winning anyway. If you guys would like my FM to be part of the contest just to boost the numbers up then it's fine by me.

Voting will end on the last day of November.

I will amend the article to reflect that Sir Taffsalot is not a participant then as well.

Contest Missions:

Builder's Blocks

Lich Queen's Demise

Not an Ordinary Guest

I was hoping that we'd also include Penny Dreadful, Lords and Legacy, and Requiem but it seems that the voting for these missions was either

non-existent or not in the correct format. Though Requiem would probably take the cake quite easily IMHO. I think Lords and Legacy would have

a good shot against Sotha's and Fieldmedic's entries.

Melan would've been sort of an underdog here as his mission is on the short side... but it's a damn good one so who knows how that would've played out.

Jesps... I can't say too much without revealing the surprise but I suspect the points for being "unusual"

would be negated by the voter's desire to have some traditional game-play. It would be a shame for him to be punished for living up to or exceeding the spirit

of the contest though.

I still haven't wrapped my head around NAOG. If it doesn't win, it will probably be some months before I decide whether any injustice was wrought. It's just plain huge.

True, nothing that unusual for those two other than "unusually good"...

L&L is a little bizarre from an architecture POV towards the end I must admit.

Requiem's high fantasy themes and framing some Builders as "good guys" kinda counts there too...

That's stretching for both I guess.

"The Builders Blocks" would surely have had a chance to get a high rank with respect to the 'unusual gameplay' aspect.

But to be honest, it did not quite make it there in my opinion.

While it is quite unique, it lacked everything for me that makes that experiment enjoyable.

So, you have to control the blocks by moving around the mouse and clicking on buttons ?

Maybe I am lame, but I just could not cope with that and played no more then 3 minutes or so.

I was hoping it would be updated to get some reasonable controls via keyboard.

As is, the gameplay was unusual for sure, but also pretty weak and no fun at all. (imho)

Not sure how much hard work went into scripting in order to make this game possible, but I wonder if a few more hourse spent on the controls might have turned it into something really cute.

Edit: What I am trying to say: I don't think departing from 'regular missions' is disrespected or punished by the voters.

But if an experiment doesn't work all that good...

Requiem's high fantasy themes and framing some Builders as "good guys" kinda counts there too...

I reckon it could qualify via

i) the snatching-the-crowns-off-the-heads section,

and ii) the Evil; if Sotha's concept of the Shadows in LQD counts as unusual (and it is), the Evil took that concept and cranked it up a fair bit.

The 'problem' with LQD and Requiem is that the unusual aspects were so well integrated into the story line, they may not have seemed as unusual as they actually were (if that makes sense). 'The Builder's Blocks', on the other hand, I'd say is extremely unusual, but only in strict TDM terms; in a broader gaming sense, it's actually pretty familiar.

Or am I the only person hereabouts who's played Tetris? :P

The fact that you can play that in TDM is pretty cool - I just wonder if someone (with more imagination than I have) could take the concept and adapt it into an integrated puzzle challenge as part of a more 'traditional' TDM FM.

You don't have to remove me from the contest. I was just saying that as VFAT2 wasn't intended to be in the contest when it was released, the poll wasn't set up to include an unusual gameplay voting option. However, as I don't care about winning then I don't think that it's a problem. If you think my FM meets the criteria of the Unusual Gameplay Contest then I would love to participate. I've never been part of a TDM contest before.

On second thoughts, if the poll doesn't reflect that of the contest then you would have no way of knowing what position it comes in. Unless it defaults to last place but that wouldn't be right. So I guess it can't be part of the contest even if it does meet the criteria

I haven't voted in this one yet as I really struggle with the unusual gameplay concept as the only really unusual one was the builders blocks and that wasn't my cup of tea at all.

Of the others they seemed to each have a number of novel parts but not really unusual - will go away and think a bit before voting

Sir Taffsalot, create a new thread just to vote on the "unusual" aspect of your mission. I can then merge some of the criteria from your original thread and have it match up with the rest of the entrants.

I don't think that's going to work. Once I've left my comments and voted in the FM thread I never bother giving it a second thought. I would have thought most people the same.

{edit} answered my own question that was here earlier.

Anyway, I'm glad I stumbled onto this thread. I want to play Builder's Blocks now just to see what the "unusual" fuss is about.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
