Pagan sound

This is the first I've heard of it. What's the name of the skin?

I'll check in a few minutes and then edit this post...need to reboot to work in DR anyway. It's the skin with the lighter tan colored leather...not just pagans, but the poor guards beggars too*.

 

Edit:

Example 1: load entity humanoid_pagans > commoners, armed/pagans 'atdm:ai_pagan_common_archer'. The default skin is the newer light colored leather pagan/leather_tunic_sleevewraps, but the belt is unknown texture (blue-white in DR) and renders pure black in-game.

*Example 2: Same results for townsfolk/beggar if 'skin' is '~'.

TDM pagans cover a wide spectrum of people--there are "urban pagans" that would be barely distinguishable from normal folk. And on the other end of the spectrum would be bizarre shapeshifters and cannibals, like the Roman stories of the Picts. Since we can't have an unlimited number of pagan vocals, they would have to hit the middle ground--a somewhat primitive, tribal character whose dialect is unusual enough to make him sound foreign, and with lots of references to nature, superstition, and mythology.

Since Judith was asking about Pagans, I thought I'd necro this thread: at one point I jotted down some ideas of my own (sample idle lines) for a rural-or-uncomfortably-urban pagan, trying for Thief-inspired cadences but with a different underlying grammar. If nothing else it might inspire further discussion of what's wanted/unwanted (it's pretty different from the script that was already floating around):

 

 

Calls them a river that armpit. Calls them air that chokes them. Half things dead, half things stale, calls them 'the city'.

 

Stands about, calls loitering. Walks away, calls vagrant. City I calls mad.

 

Grown so fast, takes him to a shaman soon. Starves and shaves and bleeds and inks him makes a man.

 

Laughs us at the fancy stones, for them too high for feed the earth. Laughs us at the haunted place, all shut off now.

 

Hedgings and fencings them the green one's gifts? Drought take hedges, storm leap fences, bows the land before hims lord.

 

Eats and drinks and dances we the leaf-king's feast; / Falls and bleeds and feedings we hims trees and beasts.

 

Mice twitchers, birds flusters: something comes to danger. Must holds me keen tonight.

 

Iron beasts drinks boiling water... houses with eyes watchers... best stays us away.

 

Twelve bells and twelve and nothing for use them. Sun don't hears. Moon don't cares.

 

[shaman] Speaks of 'elemental magics', shut away in towers rooms... What knows them of earth wears boots in Summers? What knows them of air or water but greet the storm?

 

[shaman] 'A tenth from beasts, a tenth from skies, a tenth from gods, the rest from eyes.' Knows her herbals, that's one thing, but too face-blind for be shaman yet.

Thought you'd say that. :P By way of contrast, here's some real-world pidgin (from West Africa/New Guinea):

 

 

Papa belong me-fella, you stop long heaven

All'e sancru 'im name belong you.

Kingdom belong you 'e come...

(Yes, it's the Lord's Prayer.)

 

Not very comprehensible. Thief's pidgin is reasonably understandable to speakers of English because it nearly is English, and it works by, for example, playing with the -s suffix (e.g. in TDS 'hims' appears to be a subject or object pronoun actually singular in number; in my schema it's a possessive formed by analogy to 'hers' by people who've got the idea that -s is the possessive marker but haven't absorbed the full pronoun rules of standard English). In terms of actual sounds it's less distinctive than, say, Scots or Mummerset, and that's basically the design principle I understood myself to be following.

 

In terms of the content of what they say, I was conscious of the 'one step away' criticism of Star Trek aliens (Klingons are middle-class Californians who talk about honour a lot, Vulcans are middle-class Californians who talk about logic a lot...) and worried that attempting to accommodate a full rural-barbarian-to-happily-urbanised spectrum would result in: 'I talk about nature and nature spirits a lot, yet I possibly live in a city. I have no particular feelings about this.' (Which would be my main criticism of the script on the previous page.) So I dialled back the Thiefy eco-terrorism and Trickster worship to some vague 'leaf-king' stuff, but tried to make the nature-alignment come through in opinionated comments.

I love it, the dark mod pagans are fine in ways representing and reimagining thief I would imagine since the rest of the dark mod is in ways a mirror off thief.

 

It seems a lot of the crowd here caters to more diverse group of more historically based tribal cultures than the mysterious malevolent pagans of Thief

They aren't necesarily malevolent but they are wound up on obscurantism and mysticism. Hints of gothic approaches that was a popular fad for the 90's would be fitting maybe as well.

      Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!
