Modding the new thief?

would anyone be interested in helping me do a little reversing on the new thief since there are no mod tools? I have an ok understanding of assembly at this point and have some very fancy tools to work with. If anything I would like to be able to see how their map file format is laid out and then maybe work from there.

I personally think that if they wanted people to be able to mod, they would have made it so. Any effort spent on finding ways to create mods regardless would be better spent on TDM. TDM is "our" game and you can mod it however you like.

Besides, all they would have to do is send a C&D letter, thereby making any effort you put in pointless.

I don't know about that. If you somehow found a way to edit or create (new) Thief assets, as long as the editor itself didn't infringe on or distribute

Unreal or EM Intellectual Property it probably couldn't be C&D'ed... (and EM would probably be happy because the mod scene could increase the value of

the game without any additional license costs from Unreal \ UE3 ).

Please visit TDM's IndieDB site and help promote the mod:

(Yeah, shameless promotion... but traffic is traffic folks...)

Some folks were able to figure out how to make new Mirror's Edge levels with the standard Unreal Editor, even though no modding tools were released for that game. I don't think any amount of reverse engineering will be able to fix the issues hard coded into this game, Deadly Shadows had far fewer problems and even it was a task to Mod...with an editor. I'm honestly not sure it's worth the effort. I would focus on maintaining what we already have as in what we've built for ourselves in this community.

I'd rather mod for Dishonored. But more than anything I think Dishonored & Thief4 can be good inspiration for Dark Mod maps. There's some very nice looking scenes & architecture in T4.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

If you want to take a look of T4 for the sake of modding it, why would you need assembly? You have to look first and foremost at the files that are there like INI files, maps etc.. No need to delve into the code unless you really don't get any further with what is there. If you would really take a look on the assembly level, then you have to be prepared to spend a GREAT deal of time understanding it and how it relates to the maps.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
