Any new development with DR ?

Recommended Posts

greebo is very actively working on a port of DR to wxWidgets because DR is likely to run into problems in future with the current gtk toolkit due to poor Windows support. That work is taking precedence right now.

I guess it's a features full complete project now? :)

No, it's an open source project staffed by volunteers who contribute their free time as and when they choose to. If you have a problem with the development pace you are welcome to try to recruit additional developers to fix your particular issues and submit patches. Nobody owes anybody anything.

How about paying existing devs? Would that work?

Probably not. If you pay existing devs, the old devs will be annoyed. Opensource/free projects mix poorly with hard currency. This has been discussed here one million times now. ;)

That's odd. It works for many FOSS projects.

Anyhow, point taken.

Is sad but true, is the problem with some Open Source projects and because of that they stay stagnate for years, i just hope is not the case with DarkRadiant, i love it.

Nonsense. Developers don't contribute to open source projects for the hell of it. They stand to gain something. Maybe they've tried mapping and don't like the tools. Maybe they want to play more new missions and see a better toolset as a means to an end. Maybe they're simply perfecting their craft or find it entertaining.

If someone showed up tomorrow with the code to completely remedy DR's shifting planes problem, we'd all celebrate. If this same person had paid to have that code produced, why would it be a problem? We aren't all coders. If money can produce bug fixes and improvements it would be foolish to turn down these contributions.

It's only a matter of time before such a scenario plays out. For example ...

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
