Gast eerie lullabie(s)

That sounds great Gast, I think you really nailed down the thief vibe with that tune.

In terms of what TDM supports the usual I go with is Ogg, 44100Hz, 160kbps, stereo

If you're after the wiki page here it is http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Sound_File_Formats

Looking forward to hearing some more from you :)

I liked it. It would fit perfectly something I'm working on. Are you going to put those up somewhere when you get them finished? They need to be looping and could be somewhat longer to break monotoneusness down.

Did I say I'm working on something? That is misinformation. Nothing happening in here. Not at all.

Carry on. Damn.

Thank you guys.

I mainly use Native Instruments Absynth 5 and Massive. The big bassy sound is made with Gladiator.

You're right Sotha, I'm currently listening again to some Brosius tunes and they are way longer. I plan to upload the tracks as soon as I have three or four of them so anyone can mess with them.

Happy to see that it could fit in the super cryptic project on which you are totally not working right now.

That said they are mainly comprised of surprisingly small elements.

Find your Thief 2 SND.CRF, rename it to zip, extract.

Interesting, this way it is maybe easier to create a lot of different atmospheres but is must be a painful process to fill the levels with this many snippets !

There's a lot more repetition and even shorter snippets in Thief 1. I'm going through Thief 1's SND.CRF/SFX now...

5-second ABYSS1, 6 seconds each HOWLTXTA/HOWLTXTB (played randomly?), the 9-second PUFFY.WAV, and 4-second SUBSON1(?) makes up the bulk of the hypnotic The Sword soundtrack.

The T1 example I always use in the discussions about repetitive/short vs long ambients is the "Inside at last" theme from Bafford's. It was just a single "bom" repeated on every beat, and the sound file was probably a couple of seconds long at most.

Short repeated ambients are perfectly fine, if they are musically simple and homogeneous. What sounds bad are short repeated ambients that are very "busy" with complex elements or an obvious beginning and end.

EDIT: For a couple more examples check out orb_simple_pulse and orb_rhythmic_pulse in my DarkAmbience repository. I don't claim they are anywhere near as good as what Eric Brosius can produce, but they should illustrate that a short and simple loop can work.

If you're interested on what was behind that effort you can check out an interview by Warren Spector featuring Eric Brosius himself!

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

These are great soundtracks, and what I like very much about them as well is that I haven't heard anything like these before in TDM. Many of these tunes remind me in particular of this ambience - Dark Ambient Music #4 Void (and also #6: Dreaming of Nowhere and #5: Lost Tape). It's one of the more haunting styles, in my opinion.

While listening to the ambients I made soundshaders for them so they can be tried out ingame. They'll show up in the DarkRadiant editor in the ambients list, all starting with gast_. It should go into the /darkmod/sound folder (create if necessary), and it's actually a .txt file that was renamed to .sndshd, so can be opened in the .txt editor. The sound files themselves should go into the /darkmod/sound/ambient/ambience folder.

Dropbox - gast_ambients.sndshd

It's very straightforward to make soundshaders, just copy-paste an old one and replace the ambient name and the filename. Here's a template:

AMBIENTNAME
{
editor_displayFolder ambient/ambience

description "Made by Gast"
looping
sound/ambient/ambience/FILENAME.ogg
}

AMBIENTNAME_z
{
editor_displayFolder ambient/ambience_zoned

description "Made by Gast"
global
omnidirectional
looping
leadin sound/ambient/ambience/silence.ogg
sound/ambient/ambience/FILENAME.ogg
}

@Dragofer : How cool! I'm happy you liked the tunes. Thank you a lot for both the soundshaders and the template.

Du Marteau's tracks are pretty good. Are some bits very reminiscent of the Thief sounds or is it a standard thing in dark ambient? I'm pretty new to the genre.

@c0mputer-fr0d : I'm afraid he is pretty busy working with Harmonix ^_^

You're very welcome Jaxa.

About tips, well, it depends on what are your softwares and your overall knowledge of computer music. Are you starting from scratch or do have a bit of experience?

I came across a tutorial from Kyyrla on the forums which is a good starting point as it involves free resources. It doesn't cover VST use though.

-> the cool Kyyrla tutorial : http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/16718-how-to-composing-ambient-tracks-for-dummies/

Since I mainly use VSTs I'm considering making a little tutorial when I have more free time this fall. In the meantime, if you have specific questions I'd be happy to answer them.

thanks a lot. I have a bit of experience but not a whole lot. I use reason but I have cubase 5 and a few vsts. I look forward to your tutorial but I'll keep practicing in the meantime.

I've made one sample piece before , http://www60.zippyshare.com/v/LIkq78Hl/file.html

I was thinking about expanding on it at some point but I don't know where to take it.

Your piece is quite good. Do you think it needs to be expanded? I'd say that once looped it could already be usable. I'd put some (more?) reverb on the flute thing since it feels a bit "digital" and the overall mix could use more bass but it is a matter of personal taste. About loops, all is clearly explained here :

      I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

      I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
