US presidential election

There might be truth in that but on the final steps of the long ceremony there was this, that many will note only tomorrow or the day after: http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/donald-trump-greets-hillary-clinton-after-inauguration-w462167

He also gave a tribute to her and had the public applaud them later on.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/2017/live-updates/politics/live-coverage-of-trumps-inauguration/trump-thanks-bill-and-hillary-clinton-for-attending-luncheon/?utm_term=.af67a300bbaa

That was nice.

The concerns can be appreciated, they would be righteous to keep the new president in check, but concerns are also permanently made by outsiders usually. Well, time will tell.

Maybe Trump understands that every new populist show has a price. Everything has. He's more clever than Farage or Le Pen.

When he heats up he gives more T. Roosevelt shivers.

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

Well this is what I wrote over on TTLG. It's just my first impression reading the kinds of comments coming out, eg, by high school friends. All seems so dreadfully familiar.

until it sees all the icons of its humiliation burn.

Walton Simons: This plague -- the rioting is intensifying to the point where we may not be able to contain it.

Bob Page: Why contain it? Let it spill over into the schools and churches, let the bodies pile up in the streets. In the end, they'll beg us to save them.

Good catch! :D

"Windrip is less a Nazi than a con-man-plus-Rotarian, a manipulator who knows how to appeal to people's desperation, but neither he nor his followers are in the grip of the kind of world-transforming ideology like Hitler's National Socialism"

Still "national socialism" in Germany was a con too ("socialism" was the perfect buzzword in that age). SS were wannabe aristoi / knights in the same manner of today jihadists/mujaheddins.....it's not an easy way to achieve socialism - a sort of "elitism-becoming-future-socialism" - 'cause the heavy presence of traditional elements/structures (and persistent topoi / memes.....see jewish persecution origins).

Here in Italy "national socialism" was a semi-con (with Mussolini) and now we got a mighty rewind of that myth (it seems the people are eager for myths in this postmodern age.....they are simply delusional).

All this business could make for a tolerable cheap action movie you'd watch at mindnight on a rainy Saturday. I'll grant it that. I just don't want to be there when the hammer comes down.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

It's a Deus Ex dialogue :P

I know! I was just making a general point. The coming term will have drama. I don't think it'll be worth it, but at this point one has to take what they can get.

Deus Ex "drama" was cheesy at best.

Beautifully put, and exactly captures the point I was going for. The next four years in the US will be dramatic cheese, possibly worth a midnight viewing half-asleep if it's raining outside, but I wouldn't pay $12 to see the movie.

Have any of you listened to a Trump speech? They're not clever or funny, just dour grumblemuck--even if you have a comic book villain, you want him to be witty. He gave his inaugural speech about how miserable life in the US is as if he were still campaigning. (edit: and now apparently admitted to be have been written by the leader of the alt-right/Breitbart.com, Steve Bannon, which is kind of incredible if you think about a US presidential inauguration speech being written by a neonazi. FDR wept.) The only entertaining parts are things like his campaign team is being investigating for collaborating with Russian intelligence services, his bedazzling array of conflicts of interest between US interest & personal profit, his seeming inability to tell the truth, his regular trouncing of constitutional and ethical norms like casually flirting with use of torture or nuclear arms or not releasing his tax returns, his band of robber-baron cabinet picks who are openly on a mission to destroy the departments they now head, etc, etc, the list goes on and on, every day new fodder. It's cheap pulp-level thriller material, but one admittedly has to wonder with a certain morbid fascination what's going to catch up with him first.

A U turn after knowing, you know, China's commercial/trading/business power :P

Indeed, or he's got some clever stratagem in mind to make the show more interesting for those siting in the first rows.

Though Trump may be unpredictable, he's been against China forever. Only Russia fears China and makes unilateral concessions to them all the time these days. No wonder, because they have only 3 % of world GDP. Though you could argue it stretches back to the Sino-Soviet conflict.
The policy of returning factories back to developed countries from China is actually pretty sound. But, obviously the wall with Mexico isn't cost-efficient.

Probably explains why some of them seem to be rip offs of speeches from movies

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
