Potential Free Assets?

Was looking around at some Unity/Unreal tutorials, and I found these:

Dev Assets is totally free to use, doesn't matter what you're doing, but I don't know if there's anything there that's TDM suitable. Megascans has a limited but nice-looking selection under "free", but their licensing might not allow for free use?

The only thing that might be useable are the western assets (some of the crates etc. could be used), but we already have such stuff. The overall amount of packages available is pretty low (about a dozen). Also the files are pbr. I am not familiar with that format and don't know whether it would be useable.

The stuff on megascans looks nice, but the textures used on those models already contain illumination. Not really suitable for our needs.

IIRC models like barrels aren't optimized, so that western pack might be worth checking. Although if it was made for modern engine in mind, it probably has even more tris.

So apparently the Metropolitan Museum of Art released over 400,000 images for free use just last year:

[Edit] Builder on a bicycle, there's not just paintings, but tapestries, carpets, woodwork, and a whole heap of references for mappers and modelers! Color me astounded at this collection...

Even the paid stuff seems like much better value than e.g. CG Textures / Textures.com. Great find.

Indeed great find! Really some eye candy seeing their brushes section too, as good brush presets save sooooo much time when working on a detailed project.

Indeed great find! Really some eye candy seeing their brushes section too, as good brush presets save sooooo much time when working on a detailed project.

I check a few of the assets and they aren't tillable, so thats a factor

Unless it's a tile specific resource you usually don't wanna use them whole sale from the repository (or at least just me). It's a bit more freeing to be on a procedural workflow now but it's still pretty valuable to find grunge layers and brushes to composite things with. Grunge patterns are easy enough to edit and tile in the edges if needed but man it's still pretty hit and miss to find good brush resources with all the appropriate height map data included.

Most of this stuff is useful for archviz projects, e.g. when you neen to nail down the look of your interior quickly, so you can do that with tileable textures. For games, you need optimised, unwrapped models, and materials made from scratch. You might use those textures e.g. to desaturate them and use their pattern as one of the layers. All stuff like color, detail pattern and dirt has to be done separately anyway, either by hand or procedurally.

Wow, some of the stuff from the museum are really nice. Here's a few finds:

There's also lots and lots of temple and Egyptian textures. I found a Lion Fountain head, wood cabinets, really nice tiles and dozens of interesting concretes. I need a good hosting site.

That collection of links is good alone, I could use some of these paintings for background stuff, characters that are part of the map, but aren't physically there, etc. Nothing major, but always a nice touch, I think.

Not sure what you mean by "ready to use". None of these is tileable, a lot of them have shadows from a strong light source, and none of these is power of 2 textures, which makes them unusable by definition.

Taquito, we all appreciate the effort, but it's only like 1/10th of an effort needed. These are just selected images, not ready for anything. Anyone can do that. It takes much more to make textures out of them, not to mention that we need materials, not just a diffuse texture: http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Texture_Creation_-_Basic_Tutorial

Edit: btw., if you can't make textures and materials out of these images, that's fine. Just do what Aosys did, providing links will be enough. You don't have to package these images, especially since the service you're using asks for our emails to download stuff (I don't know about others, but I don't like that).

So you haven't checked any of the packages yet? Not all the textures are just coping and aligning.

The first one of the Window examples I posted is a mirrored one cause it had a staircase on one side, the window with pink curtains is actually a piece of a chest and the last one had a black background I turned it into a png and made it see through.

So I was just making that little 1/10 step of selecting, cropping white edges and aligning textures that is such a breeze to do. Worst case scenario, someone who doesn't find it a breeze could use them or worse, someone could use them for TG or T2 fms, since I don't usually post in ttlg. Yep and sorry about the email thing but it was the only file managing site I found which didn't restrict file sizes. I'll just post the links of things I find interesting like Aosys.
