win10 how remove LOCK SCREEN?

Fidcal

Recommended Posts

I've searched the net in vain but can't find the answer. When I start up my win10 tablet after sleep it shows a full screen picture and the date and time. There is an airplane icon bottom right and another (forget what.) Touching either does nothing. Occasionally I've seen a third icon which is a power icon. That works to reboot which of defeats the object of putting the thing to sleep.

In frustration I've pressed and swiped all over the screen. [EDIT Just discovered an upward swipe goes past it.] That then takes me to the password (pointless because I don't use a password.) So then I press the empty password box and get by it to the desktop. TEE - DEE - OUS!

I have a faint memory I had a similar problem with Win8 (my main PC is Win7 so doesn't do any of this.) In the win8 I somehow got rid of that funny picture screen. Again, my faint memory of it was it might be called a start screen (not sure.)

Any way to get rid of it completely? And the password screen? (I'm guessing the password screen might be impossible to bypass (yet I somehow did it in Win8 now I think back.)

The daft thing is, if I fully switch off then later when it boots up fully, it goes direct to the desktop!!

PS, Anyone else having trouble logging in here at Darkmod? On my Opera 12 it fails many times then sometimes works and I see Fidcal at top right, but when I then select say, Off-Topic, it says you need to log in to post!! So then I tried my Vivaldi browser, this failed a couple of times in a similar way but eventually it stuck and I'm in. What gives? (oh, wait, wonder if it's a cookie thing? I'll check.)

I would also suggest Classic Shell, as this skip the swipe screen and replaces the horrendous start menu

A simplier method for the auto-login fix - https://windowsinstructed.com/how-to-skip-login-screen-in-windows-10/

Thanks, I'll look at all these suggestions in a bit. The lock screen I've seen a setting somewhere - I thought that meant lock rotation! Maybe I've set it on myself. That's the problem with no context info at the point of use. M$oft are total bastards. And if they'd blocked classic shell they are double bastards (which means they fathered themselves out of bedlock.) I've already downloaded two classic themes not tried yet but I think classic shell is a different thing for the menu. I've also got my SharpE shell up my sleeve but I can't install that for a while even if it works in win10.

What complete Cnuts.

And it looks Classic shell is no longer in development - http://www.classicshell.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8147, and the source code has been moved to Github - https://github.com/coddec/Classic-Shell

Yeah sadly the Classic Shell developer threw in the towel not long ago. It still works, but for how long, is anyone's guess.

If you don't want to go in the direction that Microsoft wants to drag you, Windows 8.1 really is a better choice than Windows 10. It's stable, so customizations you make to the system will stick and won't be overridden by compulsory updates. If you use a tablet, it works just as well on that. (Linux is pretty much a train wreck on tablets)

To each his own, but, i wouldn't get back to Windows 8 if Microsoft threw money at me. I find that Windows 10 is an improvement over 8 in every regard. Windows 8 was a horrible attempt to make a touchscreen OS work on desktop computers and laptops. Windows 10 is the real fusion. At least, it's a whole lot better on both touchscreen devices AND desktop devices. Regarding the "direction that MS wants to drag you", a lot of the feature implementations are actually based on the insider program, which gets a lot of feedback... from users. So, you'd be better off blaming the users for the stuff which gets implemented. Of course, i'm not 100% content with everything they choose to build in as well. I'd especially like control over the updates, and the big feature updates should be every 2 years, and every half a year, as far as i'm concerned. But, again, that's obviously what the people like, and MS just deliver...

I've just got a folding cover with a built in USB keyboard for mine, the problem is it doesn't seem to be a standard qwerty keyboard, all similar covers I looked at had the same layout so I guess that all have the same issue, I have tried a different one and got the same problem

Some of the keys produce different symbols when pressed to what is painted on them

For example Shift + 2 = " but the key says it should be an @ & shift + ' on the bottom row produces an @ but the key says it should be "

There's a few others as well, I can remember which are which but it's a pain

I've tried changing the keyboard map none of the language variants available make a difference

I had a look at sharpkeys, but that explicitly states it won't swap key functions, it can make every key the same but it won't swap them

I had a look at Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator but it won't install on my tablet because .net framework is the wrong version

Anyone know a tool I can generate a custom keymap for a USB keyboard that will work on Win 10 and is either free or pennies in cost as I object to spending money on something I'm only going to use once to fix a problem that should be easy to fix

OK, thanks all. I'll work through these bit by bit and come back.

First, Stumpy, thanks. Found the Lock Screen settings but there is nothing there to disable/remove it.

Settings - Accounts - Sign in options - there is no option to bypass/disable password screen - yet I know I've seen the option elsewhere (something like 'not use pasword for this user - which I've already set but I'll see if I can find it again.)

I'll say it again in different words: M$oft are total arseholes. I see there's another thread here about not using Win10. Doesn't surprise me. If you google something like microsoft error or problem or fault or etc. you can get maybe half a billion pages (claims google.) Now those are not single users but webpages where there might be dozen or hundred of people complaining/worried/distressed - trillions of manhours wasted around the globe trying to figure out how to do stuff in Windows. Fuck M$oft. And if I sound bitter it's because I am. I personally have wasted hundreds and probably thousands of hours over the last 20 years since win95, Multiply by maybe a billion users?

Well, do your think it would be different with other (especially customisable and more or less user friendly) operating systems? The only operating systems I know, where there are no problems, are highly specialised ones (e.g. on gaming consoles), because the OS has only a limited number of tasks and only has to work with a specific set of hardware. As soon as you introduce more freedom for the user, the probability of something going wrong will increase. As long as you can install windows on any given machine with a (more or less unique hardware combination) and install any given driver or program combination you would like, there is bound to be bugs. Another example to illstrate my point: Take a look at the big Bethesda games: They have an enormous world with a multitude of quests and suddenly, if you solve quest 77 before finishing part 3 of quest 32 the game crashes. It is no error anyone could realistically expect. The same goes for the OS: the more variables in hardware and software you have, the harder it gets to anticipate occuring errors. There is a solution: only allow specific hardware and software for which you could test the interaction. The result is something like Win10 S, which is restrictive as hell, but is likely more stable than the other versions. But then you have people that use their PCs for more than just surfing the internet (like most people on this board), who will complain about these restrictions. I would rather accept problems that might occur, for the freedom to use any software and hardware I want with my OS.

Haha! Don't get me started on Bethedsa! ;) I still play Fallout 4 A LOT and rate it as possibly my favourite game of all time (can't really compare with previous eras like Thief but still, I applaud the game.) However, there are a ton of design flaws: Repeated very distinctive speeches (especially insults even from people you've helped) for one which drive me crazy after two years so much so that I literally mute my sound when I go to Diamond City and Good Neighbor traders. In Thief and Dark Mod we use brief coughs, sneezes, mumbles, sniffs, etc to give life to background characters, they don't say 'make a move and I'll kill you wastelander' every feggin time they pass behind your back or 'what you looking at?' when they're behind your back' or that stupid little girl in Diamond City who comes up to you and says her dad says she shouldn't talk to strangers or I wanna be left alone to which I scream so fuck off then why come up to me and talk to me!!!!!!!!!! AAAAGGGGHH O sod it, now you've got me talking about Fallout 4. STOP. wHERE WAS i? Oh yeah...

Operating systems. Wot you say, Destined, is no excuse for the absurd, bizarre, ridiculous problems that M$oft cause. You can't seriously think it is reasonable that they put in a 'LOCK SCREEN' with no clue as to what it is or how to easily bypass it even on the very options page for the lock screen!!!!!! AAAGGGGHHH!!

Oh, just discovered that when I right click the taskbar that neither properties nor settings are there any more so I have to search to change taskbar settings elsewhere. Good job then that I know one CAN actually change taskbar settings isn't it? Pity the poor beginner who never knew and will never know. Went on the net and read on the microsoft site that its a new feature (presumably it was too easy for people to adjust their taskbar properties.) Incidentally, despite that, I'm almost sure I did find properties on right click menu yesterday. Gone now. Maybe it will reappear another day.

It's not the errors and bugs and faults, it's the VAST NUMBER of them that is annoying and the fact that M$oft have HUGE resources in manpower and experience and knowhow and money but still make a mess of it all. :(

Okay, now I know it's called a LOCK SCREEN I've changed the title of this thread and done a new net search. This guy has exactly the same problem:

https://www.tenforums.com/user-accounts-family-safety/59601-bypass-lock-screen-after-sleep.html

But near the end it's indicated that if you instead of a null password you use a real password then the 'don't need a password' works! hahahah! bangs head on wall. So I created an easy password: 'free' then repeated it below 'free' (all done blindly with no option to make visible even though I'm not working in an office or public place and it should be MY choice anyway.) Okay, then I even put in the 'hint' line 'free'. NOT ALLOWED says M$oft 'cannot be the password itself! OKay, so I put in f r e e without spaces. Haha! In your face M$oft! That is accepted.

Okay, put table to sleep, wake it up. Still got a lock screen. Still have to sign in only now I have to actually type a password not just thump it with my thumb. I'm worse off.

So now I have to find that hidden secret place that M$oft don't want you to find easily to see if it disabled my 'user doesn't to sign in' option. If that fails then try to change the password to null again if it will let me.

Okay, found it. You have to show taskbar, RIGHT PRESS HOLD window icon to get a secret menu which has many secrets including the old 'run' option.

Now enter netplwzit or something (sorry forgot already.) I mean, bring back DOS all is forgiven. This is how to access your account?!!!

As suspected, M$oft changed my option back to user MUST log in. So I changed it again. Nothing happened. Still have to log in. netplzwin again. M$oft changed it again! Try again. Nothing. Still have to log in. netplszwin. Ah! now M$oft haven't changed it. It still says I don't need to log in. Hooray. Put tablet to sleep. Wake it again. HAVE TO LOG IN STILL! FU M$OFT. I think I'll changed the power button so it always shuts down. It's not worht the aggro. I'd rather wait a minute to boot up each time. Ah... but will I now have to log in even after boot up???? waiting... waiting... NO! HOORAY SO ALL I NEED DO IS REBOOT EVERY TIME I WANT TO USE THE TABLET! I LOVE YOU M$OFT!!!!!!!

You know what's funny about all this? It now only takes me 12 seconds to boot up to desktop whereas when I put it to sleep it took me 30 or 40 seconds to get past the lock screen, thump the password log in a few times to get the virtual keyboard to appear, type in the password etc.

The most annoying background voices I know are from the female beggar in the first Assassin's Creed "Spare a coin?" in a really annoying voice. I killed some a couple of times just to shut them up...

Regardless, I don't want to say that MS is not a bunch of criminals. There are a lot of stunts they recently pulled (and they are not the only ones, just take a look at the recent "revelation" about Facebook misusing data; I was shocked  ), but there is simply no viable alternative. At least for desktop PCs. Tablets are a completely different topic in this regard.

Oh, yeah, I vaguely recall that beggar but I got stuck on the first Assassin's Creed and months later when a relative played me past the place where I got stuck I'd moved on to other games.

I've looked at Linux, and Xubuntu was my preference but still needed a lot of research for me to get fully to grips with it. So, yeah, no ideal alternative to Windows. I blame the profit-driven economic system; companies are compelled, even forced, to make profit not product. And if you really want me to rant about that, then search down for < discussions moved between tactics and politics, then finally to economics > in Chapter 68 of my story at https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11453335/68/The-All-New-Adventures-Of-Hermione-Granger-In-The-Chance-Of-A-Lifetime [cheap plug there but it is free fiction and one day I hope everyone will only need to 'work' without pay at what they enjoy, knowing that massively increased productivity will spread wealth more equally. Oh, dang, now I'm off again.

Evidently I missed one DUH!

It's a US keyboard layout, pick US English & it's fine, makes no difference when the on screen kb is used

to get to user control, Cortana needs to be useable, use its search function to find netplwiz, run netplwiz and in there there's an option to disable password use.

although if you don't have a password defined then windows 10 will show the lock screen then goto main windows 10 desktop screen.

For anyone else with the same problem reading this thread in the future, I found a registry hack that disables the lock screen at:

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-disable-windows-10-lock-screen

Not for the fainthearted especially with the tortuous on-screen keyboard but it works. Note that you still stop at the password screen!

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
