New to TDM, but wanted to offer up my comp sci skills for this excellent game.

Welcome to the Dark Side.

My advice is while or after making your own FM, you should download the sourcecode ( http://www.thedarkmod.com/downloads/ ), make sure it compiles properly, and then just start openly playing with the code locally.

I used to give myself little pet projects just to see how the code works. And then if you create a cool system, show us and then there could be a discussion about whether it's a good idea to put in the mod. That's how something like the inventory grid got in. I think that's the way to start. If you want to work on something needed, you could surf the bugtracker for some neglected tasks -- http://bugs.thedarkmod.com/my_view_page.php -- and start on something. But just note that at an early stage it can't be guaranteed that your work will get into the mod; it still has to be reviewed and discussed of course, and some things should be discussed in advance or they already have been discussed buried in the forum somewhere. You could just ask about things you're interested in though. If your major is CS and you've been studying coding, then I'm sure some of the tasks will be no problem for you. This is just my thoughts though. I'm not one of the main coders, who may have their own opinions.

Cheers!

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Thanks for the welcome @Springheel and for the advice @demagogue. I'll probably start off just going through the bugtracker and seeing if there is anything I can contribute to in that aspect. I'm also working on a mission of my own and hope to contribute some interesting A.I. and mechanical scripts for other mappers to use toward their own levels in the future. I know though that this is a democratic process and don't expect every single one of my proposed changes or additions to be immediately implemented without any sort of review; I like to think that most of us involved in the CS community have respect and appreciation for the scientific process.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
