Maya 2016: GPU hardware advice

Evening

Do you have any maya users on here, and if so I am looking for some advice on what the best bang for buck card I can find s/h for £200-250 that will accelerate rendering and support viewport 2.0.

The card its replacing is a GTX 670, and so far my options are GTX 970 £185 from cex with warranty, Quadro m4000 £200-250 on ebay, no warranty. I haven't looked at firepro cards as of yet..

Are you going for modeling, mate? Sounds good! If you are still considering it, if you havent already started learning your way around Maya, I would recommend you try Blender instead. Not only because it is free and open source, and because of all the online help, but because it is capable of pretty much anything you might want to do and it is also pretty light on your hardware, to boot. I mean, Im using an office laptop right now, several years old, integrated graphics card, and I can do all my professional work with it (as far as modeling for architecture) without a problem, including rendering. Some really heavy modeling can be an issue (stuff from a million polys onwards) when you have my kind of hardware, but any up to date system would be up for a lot more than that no problem. Very rarely would you go very very high poly if you are modeling for games, unless you are working with character sculpting and or environment/landscape modeling, or maybe when fooling around with 3d scans. Even then that are several steps that you can do to make it workable, and that is regardless of what software you are using. Anyway, just wanted to point that out, in case you are still wondering. I had a tough time learning it but now I have a blast, it is awesome.

If you are commited to maya, Im sure other guys will know more about its hardware requirements ;)

No, I am trying to source a card for someone that old timers would know off called Saturnine (The 7th Crystal, Rose cottage). He and his family are not in the best place atm financially so as an early xmas present I am trying replace the GTX 670 that is in the PC I built and sold to him a year or so ago.

As most people are aware I know nvidia cards inside out, but what I don't know is what card for my budget will give the best perf in Maya 2016 - hence the shout out for advice.

Are you sure that you need a replacement?

I have looked briefly through viewport 2.0 docs, and it seems that it uses OpenGL 3.0 core profile, depth peeling, averaged transpacency, bumpmapping --- all of these techniques are very old. Your GT670 easily supports all of them, unless I miss something.

You have a middle/high-end GPU from rather modern NVIDIA family. Unless you see that Maya is slow for you, you don't need an upgrade. Moreover, if it is slow for you, you should somehow check that it is slow gue to GPU, and not due to CPU.

  • I don't need the replacement, Saturnine does.
  • Its not that simple, yes nvidia/amd as well all know just repurpose existing GPU's to put into thier pro series card at a massive markup. But long story short Maya and programs like like perform far better on the pro versus consumer cards like the GTX670 that Saturnine already has.

What would be usefully is someone who has Maya and has experience of various gpu's

Well, according to Wikipedia:

"The GPU chips on Quadro-branded graphics cards are identical to the ones used on GeForce-branded graphics cards"

If that's the case and you just need a certified pro card to get good performance, you could try flashing a vbios from the matching Quadro card to the GTX670 and see if that helps.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

The spec of the 670 dosen't match any know quadro, also the 670 is 385 miles away so cant even play around with soft modding.

And this question has been asked over and oever - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5398555

I just want to buy a card for Saturnine, ship it too him without any faffing. The Qaudro K5000 for example is in my price range and should give maya a healthy boost in perf, I have downloaded and installed the student version of Maya 2016 with the Mentalray plugin and Saturnine is sending me an example scene that on his machine currently takes 11hrs. I will see if going from his (my old) 670 to my 1070 makes any definitive difference. Then I will take to ebay if required etc.

FYI, Mental Ray never used GPU acceleration. You can either use Iray, or Mental Ray GI option called Indirect Diffuse that will use GPU to some extent (Final Gather is pure CPU-bound), but that's more or less it.

Yeah from my understanding, unless Maya detects a "Pro" card (Firegl, Quadro) it won't activate the acceleration, which is bullshit.

But when it does it massively reduces the time it takes to do a scene render, I have read about scenes that can take a day done in 30 mins.

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
