Flat Earth Lunatics gave me an idea.

The idiots at the Flat Earth Society just gave me an idea. I saw a penguinz0 video where he mocked a video where a Flat Earther said the Earth was flat but surrounded by "ice walls". Well, Flat Earth is utter fantasy, and then I remembered The Dark Mod is fantasy. What about a mission where you are part of a secret mage mission to a nearby world, like that crazy inventor tried to do in Thief 2: The Metal Age, only to find out the world you landed on is not only flat, but you landed on the icy outer edge, a strange and alien realm home to ferocious werebeasts. The goal would be to collect a bunch of samples before igniting a bomb next to a sealed box you need to find, whilst inside of course, to launch back to Bridgeport.

Kurshock, you ought to just make one mega-thread, call it Kurshock's Thoughts or something like that, and then you can pile all of your thoughts into it as they come to you. I think you'll get a better response. The thing is there's not much discussion you can have with this -- just a comment or two admitting, yeah, that would be something -- which is a bit much for a whole thread but okay for a post or a few in a mega-thread.

That said, that is an intriguing set up. Just in terms of map design, it'd be interesting to have the snowy landscape, more supernatural & monster elements than usual, and the way I'd envision it, you could map the "end of the world" as basically starry sky box all the way down & under the edge of a cliff, with maybe a few hovering meteriods. That could be a cool sight.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Yeah, I envisioned a semi-alien magical environment, a sheer wall of ice with edges leading to caves carved from the ice itself by generations of white-furred Ape-Beasts, Yeti-like. Light would be from magic mushrooms, glowing crystals, Fire Elementals/Sprites. There would be streams of water pouring from an unfrozen pond further into the ice wall, which would come out one of the caves and float off into space. For a bunch of crazies, those Flat Earthers have a wild imagination.

Flat earthers. They always reminds me of those hillbilly sects, or individuals who build themselves a atomic shelter, and prepare for war, in the US. The fact that there's more and more of such religious, uneducated folks out there is pretty scary.

Yeah, they're nuts. Still, you can hear about all sorts of weirdos through "related topics" link pages. For example, while I was reading about Chris-Chan, I learned about someone who put his disgusting habits to shame by the name of Pamperchu in a link on Encyclopedia Dramatica. Apparently, the weirdo enjoys stealing used diapers from hospital dumpsters and old folks home dumpsters, and wore them after microwaving them to "sanitize" them. The guy is also, weirdly enough, an expert on old-fashioned technology, despite being a Winnie-the-Pooh overalls wearing furry scat weirdo who lives with a 60 year old asian american "Daddy" partner. The dude ended up getting cancer from wearing nuked dirty diapers.

there's secret portals in certain area's of the ice wall that allow you to warp to the other side of the world, japan used one of those warps to get to pearl harbour in two days.

polynesians have been using those portals for years to travel all around the pacific.

Nice try, but Japan is way too far away from the great wall of ice. Also, the portal there only leads further north. There is nothing of interest there - only wildlings and the undead.

They're not lunatics (it's an elegant joke? flat earth->lunatic :D ), they're simply in search of engagement (the gold in social media era).

Task is not so much to see what no one has yet seen but to think what nobody has yet thought about that which everybody see. - E.S.

One of the guys at TTLG runs a Flat Earther website. For him the whole thing is a massive troll, which is what I kind of always suspected is true for most of them. But if you're going to do it, you have to go all the way with it. The more outlandish the theory the better. There might be a few of them that are serious, but I bet most of them are trolls.

I wish I could say the same about anti-vaxers, but they're all dead serious.

The common element behind all of these insane conspiracy theories is an extreme mistrust of authority, especially the government. They believe the Earth is flat because the government are lying about satellites and space exploration. They believe vaccinations are a secret government plot to spread autism. They believe aircraft are spreading chemtrails as part of a government plot to control the population with drugs. They believe school shootings are faked in order to give the government an excuse to confiscate guns. Etc.

That's not to say that I particularly trust or respect authority figures or governments, but mainly because they are useless grandstanding idiots, not Machiavellian schemers who can successfully dupe entire populations.

I would rather say it's a complete mistrust in knowledge which humanity gathered for hundreds of years. Or a total lack of education. You have that literally everywhere these days. Especially in politics. Or, also, in parenting. People think that common knowledge, which is passed over by former generations is obsolete, and make their own rules, which are half baked, and not properly thought through. Imagine we would be indigenous people, living in the wild. We wouldn't survive a day without knowledge which has been passed by our ancestory.

But of course, only a REAL idiot can't understand this is all about trolling the wannabe-debunkers.

AntiVax (or other health-related "concerned citizens") are fear-induced brainwashed people but I suspect someone is pulling the strings in those communities too....

And tribalism; don't forget that. The "our side is virtuous and the other side can't be trusted" narrative does a lot of heavy lifting there too.

Exactly, tribalism is the REAL key.

I think, here, me and nbohr1more are *really* dubious about the "state" as a human civilisation product (me, I'm dubious about the "civilisation values" too and the responsability discharging behind the institutional depersonalisation mechanic) in general but the real error is to mistrust X and follow the Y tribal narrative.

be a bit like the 20th century being 99 years long. should have moved into the next century at the end of 2000 but because of popular belief it moved over one year early.

goes back to Romans not having a number zero in there calendar, or in other words there should be a day zero and a month zero for there to be a year zero.

I am pretty sure some of the Russian, Montenegrin, alt-right, maybe Chinese, et al, agit-prop groups create a lot of content for these just to fan the flames of these kinds of groups because it sows chaos and works for their clients' interests. I think it's a weird mix of top-down calculated agitation and bottom-up sincere revolt.

Yeah, well, people can be swayed to believe almost ANYTHING, no matter how stupid or evil the premise. Back when I followed the idiotic adventures of Christian Weston Chandler and clicked the related link to Pamperchu, I clicked a other related link. This one was for a man named "Deeker". Now apparently, he was a guy considered a "sick fuck" by people on a website devoted to "Adult Baby Diaper Lovers", so you know he went full pedo. The guy wanted to start a cult where older men and younger men both sit around in diapers fucking each other all day, no goddamn joke, while women were reduced to slaves who produced children and worked to enable the disgusting pedo-hedonism as "loyal mommies". The sick bastard was apparently a fan of a children's diaper catalog that had kids in only diapers that sold for 400 fuckin' dollars while the diapers were cheap and shitty. No surprises that it's actually basically a legal front for child porn according to the Encyclopedia Dramatica page on sick-fuck Deeker, because the cops aren't able to bust the pervs.

Another crazy conspiracy believed by a dumbass called "Ghost" from "True Capitalist Radio" was that African Americans aren't from Africa. He believes that the early settlers crossbred natives captured as slaves and Hispanics to create a slave race, and that the government covered it up. No shit, the guy went full retard with his "FAKE AFRICANS!" nonsense, but he also doesn't believe we went to the moon, climate change, and thinks autism can be caused by vaccines.

climate change got stuffed by that earthquake in japan where the east coast of japan dropped by 15 feet, put there anti tsunami walls down by 15 feet, 10 feet below the tsunami they got hit by and knocked the earth off its axis by 2 degrees, so now some countries are further north by 2 degrees while others are 2 degrees further south, while others didn't change. that 2 degrees makes it seem like its a lot colder in some countries than before, while other's feel a lot hotter than it was,

there's that conspirancy where certain technology came from aliens from other planets, and not that it was developed in other countries outside the usa, eg like velcro got from alien spacesuits, actually invented by a swiss guy based on plants that have seeds with a raised hook surface and therefore stick to wollen/fur surfaces. or night sight goggles obviously alien technology or In 1929, Hungarian physicist Kálmán Tihanyi invented an infrared-sensitive electronic television camera for anti-aircraft defense in the UK

Actually, i'd retreat from my former point a bit, and say that the kind of thinking (flat earth and stuff) is actually something which isn't totally extincted yet. When you look back in time, people believed all kinds of things, which weren't explicable. The fact that we should know better these days surely has a point, but, i don't expect stupid ideas and thinking to have completely died out. Yet.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
