My new website

Notice the gap in the side bar graphic which only IE puts in there.

I'm going to document all my characters here, and maybe do some tutorials as well.

Not a bad site at all. (oddly enough, not only does IE misrender the page, it also loads a lot slower in IE, probably due to it having issues with your javascript <_< )

Have you cleared your cookies and temporary internet files multiple times and run tests with each browser to make sure it's, indeed, the browser that makes it load slower? For example, loading the site for the first time with IE would've skewed things to make it look like IE was a slow piece. Could also be your connection.

Unless it's consistently slower every time you visit the page.

Oh well, it loads up fast for me on cable modem on IE, so I doubt it's IE. (Unless you're worried about it being 2 milliseconds slower or something.)

Regarding that gap, maybe the other browser's aren't rendering it correctly and IE is the only that is ;) Hehe, yeah, I bet you'll go for that one.

That's not the only gap error. It's the ony one you can see becasue the background colour of the page is the same as the image backgrounds.

If I set the BG color of the page to black, you can see it's absolutely littered with gaps in IE. In, fact it virtually doens't get a single border correct.

It's quite ridiculous really. I cna't imagine al the extra work thousands of web developers have to go to all the time to fix these things.

I was just wondering if everyone noticed the rollover gifs on the characters there. It's not obvious that they're dynamic images and people may just go straight to the menu without noticing it.

Also, if you click on the sidebar links you go to thumbnail galleries, but because of the java menu when you hover over it people may not realise it's clickable.

Mmm, purdy site, oDD. Only thing I'd say is that I'm not too fond of JS menus... They feel kind of uncontrollable, and not as tactile as other ways of navigating. Nonetheless, I like the rollovers.

By the way, whoever complained about rollovers - you can disable them, at least in Firefox. Go to preferences, web features and under the javascript, "Advanced" menu, you can disable certain annoying things. Personally, I leave that option on, as buttons that use the rollover feature can be helpful as a GUI feature.

Anyways, anyone who think that IE is as good as or better than Firefox/Opera, needs to rescrew their head on. First off, I personally find tabbed browsing essential. Cluttering up the UI? How about cluttering the desktop and taskbar? I currently have open 9 tabs. Tabs allow me to open a bunch of links at the same time, then read them all at my leisure. I can keep other stuff open without having to clutter things up, and better yet, with an extension or two, I can control exactly what happens when I load tabs and so on. I don't get things obscuring what I'm reading unless I ask them to, for example.

Customisability is better than IE with extensions - most things you might not like can be fixed. Google search bar makes searching a tad quicker, and keyword bookmarks are fantastic. For example, I have one set for wikipedia: "wiki %s" translates to "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%s." Other obvious choices are for dictionary.com, image search and suchlike.

I don't know whether IE has a bookmark toolbar, but that's handy, too - you can set folders for bookmarks to appear below the addressbar.

Web developer extension is VERY useful to web developers (surprise) shortcuts to W3C validators, a CSS editor, window resizer, and all sorts.

Well, whatever. Firefox/Opera - they rock. IE sucks, with all its rendering issues and insecurities included, as well as its inexcusable lack of features. Like PNG support. I'll cease my advert here.

I'm curious what causes this. Is it bad coding, or IE? Can a pro take a look at the code and let me know? Does the page meet W3C.org standards for HTML coding? If not, would it look right in IE if it was corrected?

I'd fully understand if it's IE's "fault", and that's cool... but I'm really just curious; for personal knowledge.

I'm going to paste the code here before oDDity has a chance to alter the code and make a different version live that IE likes better:

The table code was created in adobe image ready using slices, and then imported into dreamweaver. Dreamweaver gives two errors about 'the marginheight attribute of the body tag not being supported' in IE. I think it's becasue it's set to zero.

I can't be bothered debugging it since only that one small gap error is actually visible.

Seriously guys, tables are outdated. You can do so much more and get better, faster and cleaner code with div's, p's and span's. You've even said yourself that IE doesn't render tables correctly, so why are you using it? Tables and table-data's should be used where they belong, in ltable data sheets/lists.

Look at the code I wrote for the Alien Swarm website (ignore some of the contents that isn't valid xhtml and contains tables - I wasn't the one adding that - and that's why I'm linking to the Awards page which hasn't been changed yet). I'm not saying it's perfect or anything, but it shows that you can do lots of/most things without the use of tables and td's. And atleast this website looks (almost, except some line heights which doesn't really matter) the same in all 3 major browsers.

Most excellent. I'ma bookmark'em. Fortunately I know 'classic HTML' really well -- you know, tables and such. And I have some (somewhat limited) experience with CSS. This shouldn't be 'too' complicated... I hope.

I have recently heard the W3C and other web people have been hitting Microsoft hard the past while for allowing IE to be so "loose" -- where IE pretty much displays a lot of HTML (deprecated (depreciated?) HTML stuff, etc.) that it's not really supposed to. Like allowing <i> tags instead of <em>, and tables formatting layouts, or whatever.

With this crackdown, I heard we might expect the next version of IE to be more like the Firefoxes and Operas of the world that aren't as lenient with what they allow.

Anyone heard the same news?

Using divs and spans seperates the content from the layout. You can totally change where everything is just by changing the CSS file. For example, you could change the location of the menu from the left hand side, to the right, on every page in your site, simly by changing a few settings in the CSS.

I am a satisfied Firefox customer, but I am still not used to tabbed browsing, because I always end up closing the browser down completely when I meant to just close one tab  So I'm still opening pages in new windows when I could just open a new tab, oh well, I guess I'll get used to it eventually. But Firefox is all I need in a browser - still being on 56K, I am not all that interested in all the bells and whistles browsers offer, I just like the simple, clutter free design of Firefox. But IE is a heap of shit. I actually don't have any axes to grind with Microsoft, most of their products are very good, if a little expensive. IE is just not one of their better efforts.

I don't care about divs and spans Vs tables. This is the first site I've made and I doubt I'll be making another one, so it's hardly worth looking into.

The point remains that other browsers can render it correctly, while IE cannot.

So, invalid - most of it is actually missing ALT tags for your images, which aren't so critical but should be included anyway. The biggies are "topmargin" and "leftmargin" and so on, I don't know enough HTML to know what's going on there.

I assumed dreamweaver sorted out the right code for you when you used the graphical layout window.

Still, opera and firefoc have no problem with any of it.

IT's quick and easy though, which s the main thing. WHo wants to go learn HTML to knock one website together.

As for alt tags for the images- I'm laiughing at the idea of anyone trying to browse my site, which is essentially a gallery, with images turned off.

Yeah, like I said - alt tags are kind of a minor issue. Nonetheless, they're handy in certain situations... I think they are, anyway! I dunno, properties page for the image or something like that. Personally, if it wasn't much hassle, I'd fill out the alt tags anyway, even if it was just with the filename of the image That's what I do with my own gallery script, although in the future I may decide to do something fancier, using a database or some such nonsense. At the moment, there's no provision for image titles or descriptions, though.

By the way, oDD, I'm not sure it does come out correctly in firefox. Look at this screenshot I took after hitting Ctrl-A: http://www.fishface.g.la/gallery.php?img=pixelwerks.png (taken in Firefox 1.0.2, Gecko/20050524) The gap in the menu is visible, too...

Oh, you also get dithering artifacts when you hover... Not sure that that was intentional.

ALT tags are handy for people hooked into slow internet connections. While the images are loading, it'll show the ALT tag text in the image placeholder. Since your gallery page is mainly images, that's all the more reason to use ALT tags -- so people know what is loading on that screen.

They can also click that thumbnail image placeholder with the ALT text and know that they'll be clicking to a larger version of the image. Otherwise, they have to wait for all the thumbnails to load to know what each one represents.

I normally just put what the picture is in the ALT tag. For instance, "Noble Women" ... or "Noble Women - Click for large version of image."

EDIT: Yo oDDity - I thought you might be interested... I heard a song called "Oddity" by Coal Chamber the other day. I didn't personally care for the song, but it cracked me up since I thought of you and your Scream avatar. Heh

I think the saying is "simple things amuse simple minds" ;)

Anyways, yeah - that's what ALT tags are good for. Woo. Any idea what's going on with those gaps? They're there in mozilla, too.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
