City Reference Pictures

Architecture isn't my thing, so rather than trying to draw the city I've collected a series of photos. Each one captures something of the flavour of Bridgeport as I see it.

These are meant to be used as inspiration for our mappers and modelers.

People can feel free to include their own images.

Wow, these are really inspiring! The only problem I now have is taming the desire to make some million poly city scene that would run 1/2 fps! So I have to take some the grander scenes and take the inspiration and translate it down to smaller more immediate type scenes.

But thank you! Stuff like this is very helpful and nice to see.

PS - I'm glad you directly hosted the pics so they are all still around! Usually after a few months half the pics out there are bad links.

You may be pleasantly surprised by what you can get away with in the Doom 3 engine -- this is not crappy TDS with its ultra-low performance and instability. BSP holes are a thing of the past, and with judicious use of normal-maps you can simulate a lot of high-poly detail that would otherwise be impossible.

Awesome stuff... really inspiring. I'm very smitten by the building with the arch. Looks awesome and is very doable even without many textures. Tough part is what's inside lol...

Here's some interesting stuff: Mostly black and white (pictorial lectures of 16th-17th architecture - not quite medieval, but some of it would be perfect).

Interesting stuff - click the links each leads to pics

I think many amateur "web designers" simply don't realise that adding size information to an image still results in the whole large image downloading to the browser, so they never bother to scale it properly. Perhaps if they did have to manually scale, they would realise how stupid using tiny images is (or maybe they just have 640x480 screens and their 210x130 image actually looks quite large).

One thing mappers might like to take note of in town maps is attaining a level of authenticity of the period. One of the main effects on Medival architecture was rents. In those days, rents were charged according the the area of the land the building sat on. So in order for tennants/builders to have larger houses with lower rents was on multiple story buildings, the upper stories (2nd floor n up) would step out into the street usually about a metre or so beyond the lower story. This is the origin of those medival styles we see. Be nice to see that applied in areas. :)

Beta mapper check this address for inspiration. It contains an article of tudor houses, it is aimed for children, but contains good pictures and some nice detailed info on houses. I should've read that before I started mapping...

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
