Gas Arrows, Bot Sketches

Here's two versions, i'll let you decide.

Here's some automaton sketches i did today, i'm trying to go for more of a "mechanical beast" (emphasis on the beast bit) with these. Someone had mentioned that the bulkiness of the T2 bots wasn't quite right, so I thought this would give us a somewhat distinct look away from those bots.

I gotta go with the green gas arrows...white just doesn't convey OMG POISON GAS like green does.

I prefer the older mech drawings on your site over this one. The mechs in my opinion should be pretty neutral in what they resemble...not really looking like a beast or human, only a rough characature of the human form.

We'll see what everyone else says, but my vote is to keep the face and neck and rework the rest of the body.

Edit: But if you wanna go with a really wild idea...you could have the builders riding them.

Well as i've already said the mecha work on my photobucket site is for another project of mine, so using those is out of the question from a personal point of view.

We'll have to see what kind of mechanoids that everybody else wants for the final decision though.

(I'll do some more once my tablet arrives, mmm...wacom :) )

What's wrong with the "bulkyness" of the old ones? They look just like what they are - huge boilers on legs. Which is what they would have to be. Mostly all boiler, to get enough power going to drive that thing. And then, very very simple, because the boiler is heavy enough as it is. Which explains the spherical shape, and the clunky side-side walk.

I say keep the steam and clunkyness in mind. I think the old one did a good job of making it "beleivable".

At the extreme other end of the scale, you have those stupid garish outfits the X-Men have in the comics, just to look cool. No practicality whatsoever. Notice they changed their outfits for the movie, for something more beleivable.

I reckon it pulls you in to the atmosphere more, as the old mechanist bots did for me - had me staring at them as they walked by, wondering how they worked.

I prefer the green one too, but I'm worried it is too close to the moss arrow. We need to be able to tell them apart visually, especially if we don't have a weapon indicator in our HUD.

Could we change the colour slightly, so that the two greens are significantly different? Maybe go with a yellowy green.

On the topic of robots...bleh. As much as I liked T2, I can't get around the feeling that robots are inapprpriate for the setting. Still, we'll have to include them for the T2 fans, but I don't think that's something we'll need for the early releases.

When it does become time, I want to steer clear of any kind of 'mecha' look. We should look at some DaVinci sketches as reference.

I don't really see how Da Vinci sketches will help. He did seige engines and stuff like that, nothing that really seem "thiefy" to me. But i may not have seen all of the sketches, post some up to let me know what you mean.

I also think that we should keep at least some mecha-style robots. If nothing else, to keep with the steampunk world and the style of T2.

I for one liked the bots better than the undead. I think this is another one of those fantasy/steampunk conflicts we're going to keep having.

The arrow kept going ugly yellow when i adjusted it, let me see if i can tweak it better. The similarity between it and the moss arrow was one of the reasons i made the white one.

He also created diagrams of the first robots. At least it would be something more appropriate to the time period than heavy-duty mechanics.

If you're interested in some good tutorials and critical feedback, there are a couple good forums to look at. Epilogue is one that has a lot of stuff available that might help.

Have you got example pictures to show? I'm really interested to see. I'm all for whatever kind of machine type things that will look old fashioned and believeable some how. I might like the DaVinci stuff a lot better than the original T2 stuff!

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
