Ultima 8: Pagan

Forsaken

Recommended Posts

I downloaded Ultima from somewhere, I'm not sure it is a full version, but I can't play it. I unpacked it, it has U8.exe, Install.exe; I loaded Install, and it says I have not enough space on my computer, but then I have a choice whether to install or not. When I install, nothing happens. Playing U8.exe doesn't help either... Done with DosBox and without it.

Too late to save us but try to understand

The seas were empty -- there was hunger in the land

We let the madmen write the golden rules

We were just Children of the Moon

We're lost in the middle of a hopeless world

Children, Children of the Moon watch the world go by

Children, Children of the Moon are hiding from the Sun and the Sky

I wish I could help you... :( I can only encourage you to try to make this game run. It's great!

In case of older games, the best soultion was always for me using DOS custom boot disks. The best boot disk was TechWOrm's, but I can't find it anywhere in the net right now. You can also try this site:

http://bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

[EDIT]

TechWorm is here:

Cartographer's Note FM: in production.

Download Old Comrades, Old Debts FM or Mistrz Effects demo and see my old projects!

Well, looks like it works... Just loaded and all. Talked to some guy, then went to see how the Lady got someone's head chopped off... And my guy doesn't have a clue of what the dark zone did he forget here...

Can you pick up stuff? I can only click on them to see their names, but not do anything.

Is the save automatic?

No, save when you want, if I remember correctly. You can pick stuff up and do different things with them, depending on what they are, but of all Ultimas beyond IV, Pagan is probably the least interactive. And definitely the most arcadey.

If you want to see a really great, solid, interactive Ultima, UVII: The Black Gate is the way to go. Though Pagan is pretty good too. I love that end cutscene (brought a tear to my eye the first time, so many years ago... don't laugh!) and the music is fantastic (on a good soundcard).

Though Ultima Underworld (by none other than Looking Glass) can't be beat for first person Ultima. Okay, I've said Ultima enough times, and I'm starting to ramble about Ultima, so I'll just stop.

*I wonder, where could I download the end movie from Pagan...

Looks like *Diary* is saving, because that's all there is there...

Found some mushrooms... "mmmm" and then from some other the screen changed color back and forth... Squashed some thingy also. A scelet or something. Is there EXP in the game, does it make sense to go squashing things?

"Ultima Underworld" - they made Arx Fatalis based on that one, didn't they? That company that makes DM now? They reffered to Scythian Abyss too...

Didn't get to the music yet. Playing at day, have to watch out so no one sees me moving a pack of pixels in a window...

There is music all the time, so if you're not hearing it, you haven't configured it.

Run install, and choose general midi as your soundcard. Dont' actually "install", just use it to configure your settings.

Make sure music is turned on in the options.

Yeah there are stats. Press C to go into combat mode and attack things, press C again to exit combat mode. Don't do it in town, you'll get killed. Press I to see your inventory. I think doulbe click on yourself to see your character sheet, there you can drag things from your inventory onto your character sheet to equip it.

Have fun with containers - you can put things in boxes, and then put those boxes in other bags, and put bags in your backpack... you can have fun organising thigns like that.

Some thigns wont fit in other things, obviously.

If you have dosbox its worth setting up so you can play lots of old games, not just one :) So you put all your old games in some folder, eg C:\OldGames, then mount that as C.

Add the mount command at the bottom of dosbox.conf so you don't have to type it every time. All this info can be found in the readme though.

Just glad to help someone who also likes this game :D

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
