Lw Question About Rendering Textures

I think I may have figure out why I cant render my textures in Layout, but theres a problem fixing it. "Inside LW8" says on page 31 that if you cannot see your images directly applied in Layout, press D key to callup Display options and make sure OpenGL textures is turned on. The problem is that when I call up the Display menu, I cant find any boxes or buttons talking about OpenGL. Am I missing something in the menu or do I not have OpenGL? What the hell is OpenGL b.t.w.?

After you hit "d" in Layout (not Modeler), you see a pop-up that has two tabs (General Options and Display Options), right? Under Display Options you should see the OpenGL option. That's weird if you don't. The only thing I could think (and I'm no expert) is that maybe your video card doesn't use/support OpenGL, but instead uses Direct3D or something? I dunno, I'm purely speculating here. That doesn't seem right, though, as I thought video cards could do most everything nowadays. What video card do you use? Maybe posting this will help experts better diagnose the issue you're having...

Sorry to hear about the troubles/frustrations...

Ahh, I think I was hitting D in Modeler not Layout D.F., that is probably why I couldnt see the OpenGL tab. My card is the Nvidia Gforce 5600 or something like that, its the standard junk sent out with the Dell Dimension home package. Ive been told here before that its time to upgrade even if only to play the game let alone doing design. Thanks

Ahh, yes... Layout is the way! :) Good luck!

Yeah, it's almost time for an upgrade there, unfortunately. I used to have a BFG GeForce FX 5700 Ultra 128MB card that was pretty good for a while, and then I learned the FX series sucked with DirectX 9 stuff (I was only getting 2 or 3 FPS in 'ES IV: Oblivion' so I had to upgrade. I got an overclocked GeForce 6800 GS 256MB card as a fairly inexpensive replacement to hold me over until next year when I start looking into upgrading for Windows Vista and DirectX 10. The 6800 has done pretty good for me so far, and made certain things in Lightwave a bit quicker, but I still can't crank things up to full on most games.

I just tried the MS Flight Simulator X demo last night and my PC did fairly well, but comparing my computer's screenshots to what Microsoft has put out, I see there is a lot of room for improvement ;)

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
