Bonehoard Concepts

Cool, that was quick!

I must say that I like both (angua likes them too, she's looking over my shoulder), very inspiring, especially the entrance in the first concept is fitting really well with our imagination.

For the actual map we would combine these two, such that the entrance is a bit less exposed to the "empty" surroundings, if you know what I mean. It should perhaps be at the end of some mini-canyon, where the rocks block the way to the left and the right, it would feel more embedded in the mountain (this would be a bit like the entrance to the Paths of the Dead in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, I guess, although the canyon wouldn't have to be very long, around 50 meters would be quite enough). The valley can be reached from the leftovers of the temple.

The second shot is pretty cool as a starting point of the mission. There could be some ruins of buildings that once had walls too, as counter-weight to the pillars.

Looking great, this is very appreciated!

Funny, that's exactly what I thought when I saw the first drawing -- use terrain to focus the player in towards the entrance, with some trees or other vegetation to flesh out the surroundings a bit.

Fleshing out your fantasy is so cool...*drool* I really plan to do a week of mapping during the Christmas holidays together with angua (as we did last September), so that this map gets a huge push forward. This will also produce a lot of input for DarkRadiant, I suppose.

At the moment we have the bonehoard core section (the part that most of you know, although angua changed it quite a bit in the last months), a large hall leading underground to this core, so the entrance itself is still missing. These concepts are helping a lot (thanks again, kfmccall!)

(I will have to write on my thesis during the holidays as well, so I hope that won't interfere too much.)

Yeah, that's funny how the same thoughts come up even with half a continent in between :). Please feel free to make some suggestions, it's always good to get even more inspired.

The thesis or the map? :P

The thesis of course :D. If all goes well, I will be finished with my studies in March 2007 (I really should finish it in time, as I've already got a job offer with exact that starting date). I still got a load of exams to go (next is Tuesday), so I sure will be kept busy over the next months. To be honest, I chose to join the Dark Mod at the most unfitting time in my whole life, but I really couldn't help it :D.

I know. I like asking rhetorical questions. ;)

I wish I was that close to finishing my studies. :( Good luck with exams!

Heh, me too...

greebo - if you need some grave models for your map, you might want to use one of the models I have made recently. They should be on CVS by the end of this year. Take a look at this thread to see what's in the set so far:

Heres another one, I drew this a few days ago and meant to color it, but realized that the history 101 final might be just slightly important.

Give me ideas for objects to put in the drawings, I sometimes get lost in focusing too much on the linework rather than actually putting in a good range of objects/subject matter.

Man, I wish I could do drawings like this :)

I really love the big statue in that concept, I think this will be one of the next models I will have a go at (if none of our modelers jumps at this one first). I already made a similar statue for the first "release" (with open hands holding a cup), but it's not very well textured, and it's not that expressive as this one.

The actual entrance could be a little smaller, like in the first concept you posted, and (as already mentioned in an earlier post) a short sort of "canyon" really would add to the tension. Could you combine these ideas in another concept drawing?

As for items and objects: angua already asked me to ask you for a concept of a statue, but I think you're nearly there with this concept. Perhaps you could draw a larger view of just this large statue (this would also facilitate the modeling task even more). A gargoyle would also be really cool, but even harder to model, I'm afraid.

Anyway, we really appreciate your concepts, so thanks for that and keep up the good work!

For what it's worth, I like the size of the entrance in that concept. It could be occluded with more vegetation or rubble, as I think it would be quite cool to work your way through junk and then get to a partially hidden but fairly imposing entrance.

  • 10 years later...

Anyone happen to still have a copy of the images from the OP? They're used in the mission download menu design, and I don't think I have a local copy.

Nm, found a copy.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).

Well then, it's been about a week since I released my first FM and I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised by its reception. I had expected half as much interest in my short little FM as I received and even less when it came to positive feedback, but I am glad that the aspects of my mission that I put the most heart into were often the most appreciated. It was also delightful to read plenty of honest criticism and helpful feedback, as I've already been given plenty of useful pointers on improving my brushwork, level design, and gameplay difficulty.
I've gotten back into the groove of chipping away at my reading and game list, as well as the endless FM catalogue here, but I may very well try my hand at the 15th anniversary contest should it materialize. That is assuming my eyes are ready for a few more months of Dark Radiant's bright interface while burning the midnight oil, of course!
