Is anyone else using Vista?

I believe that (Vista ready VMWare) is in beta at this time. There was mention of this at work. Could you imagine though, a vista VM? MOLASSES BLOAT!

 

I disagree with the 'self-builders going with Vista' notion. Vista is by and large being shunned by the community, or are we not reading the same news and trends (and even admissions from MS)? Those on the technical side of things certainly aren't more interested in a DRM locked-down bloated OS, regardless of whatever it may have gotten right this time around.

What community? Gamers? They'll change eventually. Remember how no-one wanted XP back in the day? Vista is here to stay and from my pov that's a good thing because IIIIIIII like it!

I actually didn't mind xp back in the day, I thought it was a pretty decent OS...but I preferred Server 2003 once I tried it. I really hate how some companies will lock their applications and refuse to let you install if it detects a server 2003 OS. It's so pointless, I circumvent all their crap and what do I find? The apps run better on Server 2003 than my XP installation. Go figure.

 

Yeah, SE...Vista is likely pretty stable since it's built on the Server 2003 code base...I just can't stand all the bloatware attached to it. When an app is released to strip it down, like with XP/2000 Lite...I might give it a chance.

Oh, a lite version would certainly be preferable as the overheads are big big big.

 

But cross OS compatibility of DR and TDM is absolutely essential.

@Subjective Effect: I have a snapshot for you. Please extract these files over an existing installation (0.9.4) and start darkradiant.exe from the command line, so that the debug output gets printed to the console.

Doesn't matter. DarkRadiant should be able to start without Doom 3 - it will probably crash before it has the chance to check for game resources anyway.

Ah, yes, this is what I wanted. Ok, so it seems GTK is initialised and DR crashes during module initialisation. I'll prepare another build with more debug output. Stay tuned.

I wonder if this is something to do with the module interface (linkage issues etc) on Vista. At what point did the new module system go in?

It was implemented in 0.9.3, so this might be a clue. In the above snapshot, I forgot to add debug outputs before the std::logic_error exceptions, so this provides another option to make things clearer. Let's see what the current debug output says.

That doesn't make any difference. Vista 64 runs any 32 bit app anyway. You only need a 64 bit version if you wanted it to be able to use more than 2 gig of ram.

Even if Vista runs in VMWare, I'm pretty sure OpenGL applications won't.

Yes, that's what I suspected. Only for Direct3D, not fully functional, and only available in Workstation (not Server which is available for free).

 

I have long given up understanding VMWare's product lineup - it is more complicated than the taxonomy of butterflies and changes more often than my underwear :)

 

As for OpenGL, is DR able to run (or at least start) without it at all?

Output from Debug 5. I hope this is getting to the bottom of things.

Not very enlightening, but I hope that this next snapshot will reveal anything. It seems that the first two RegistryToggles are created fine, but the last one crashes. Wtf?

 

Anyway, here's the new snapshot:
