FM: Patently Dangerous Crashes :(

first of all let me say this is one hell of an amazing job you people have done. I've been a thief fan for too long now and I feel like this is the first project to get the feel of thief right since 2001! ( Sorry TUT, it was fun, but It was missing something...)

I've played through the origional FMs and they were fun, but I was overjoyed to see the first full-sized FM release the other day.

Only problem is, it ALWAYS crashes for me!

Random times, but always outside. It seems to happen when i move into an area with a lot of new geometry to render at the same time.

2 gig ram

ati 1600x 128 mb

core duo 2 ghz

i know not the best system but even with the settings really low this FM crashes.

Is there any logs I could post to help you guys figure out the problem? I'd really like to start getting involved with this project in any way I can.

Keep up the amazing artistry guys!

Love,

paperbag

I had an even slower system. There are others with bare-bones systems running TDM as well.

Also, could you describe more completely what sort of crash you're getting? Is this a crash-to-menu, crash-to-desktop, are there any warning pop-ups?

It's possible that this is related to the column objects that has been crashing the game, that other people have mentioned.

Try this fix:

http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/10125-fm-patently-dangerous-oct3109/page__view__findpost__p__199541

And if that doesn't work, this fix:

http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/10125-fm-patently-dangerous-oct3109/page__view__findpost__p__199536

And if those don't work, then post again.

(I'm thinking it might include more objects than the pillars, e.g., with their reversed-normals possibly showing, since someone was still crashing even after deleting the pillars, like the "castle" wall bordering should be deleted too.)

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Would anyone mind if I add my problem with this FM here? It's probably a different issue (I haven't had the crash due to the pillars yet and my gfx is nvidia), but it results in a crash as well.

Everything worked without problems until

I emerged from Harlan's rooftop window.

Since that point, saving and loading started takes much longer than before and occasionaly, the game will CTD upon loading. After getting thrown to desktop, looking at task manager shows Doom3.exe still using up to a gig and more of ram for at least a minute or so (at that point I became impatient and ended the process manually).

I'd also be glad to supply additional information, if possible and necessary.

How large are your save game files?

You can see them in the Patently_Dangerous folder in your Doom3 folder.

If they are ridiculously large (a problem we've heard before), then that may be a factor.

Well.

I would presume 328 MB for a single savegame file could be classed as "ridiculously large" :)

Also, the latest crash produced a log in the console... Says "malloc failure at <number>". I would just append the log here, but my gaming machine isn't connected to either the LAN or the internet currently. I saved the log to a file though, so I can still get it if it's gonna be useful.

Yep. That sort of size for a savegame is obviously not supposed to happen and is causing the error. People that know this technical stuff better than I are looking into it. I hope they figure it out. It never happened to me in my looong period of testing this.

It's already fixed actually. Search for "saved games".

hi, i have some issues too:

Game crashes, if the Crazy on the 3rd floor kills me;

When i block the Door of the Crazy with a corpse and finish him with arrow while he keeps trying to open the door it closes and the key to the lil girls coffin becomes unreacable; in the inventors house it is impossible to open the door opposite the stove, even causing a ruckus so the guy comes down doesnt work.

- I don't know about a crash when you get killed there. I wonder why.

- Re: closing the crazy guy behind the unopenable door... Sorry, that's a legitimate design flaw I didn't think about. It doesn't happen on Easy. I'll see if I can think of a fix for it.

- Re: the locked door in the inventor's house. There's a key on the right side of his upstairs table that gets into that room (going through the door down the stairs). Edit: Ah, unless you haven't gotten upstairs yet. From the roof you can climb onto, turn right, go forward, drop on to that little awning, then open the window across from you into the inventor's house.

Thanks for your comments.

no problem, i am in awe that the creators response is this swift. the door problem only arose after i failed miserably at man to man combat, all the fight moves are a bit awkward and i seem to be inept at learning them. so i started looking for ways to exploit the game mechanics in order to advance.

EDIT: the savegame problem seems to be independent of my location, everytime i try and load a quicksave ingame the mod crashes, if i die inyour mission the game crashes. all other fanmaps display a death screen, but this one just crashes. the game crashes upon my reaching the evac-point as well. seems to be a problem with cutscenes. but nonetheless it was a pretty fun, albeit sick mission.....

also thanks for the little present at the end of the lofty rabbithole, i really enjoyed getting something for my rather fruitless attempt at circumnavigating the guards. it helped immensely in dealing with the crazy.

You can hide from that guy and then take him out from behind... it's tricky but doable. :)

My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

It's actually not even all that tricky:

The first corner past the door is dark enough that if you walk straight to it and crouch in it, he'll walk right by you. Then you KO him from behind.

The save-game crashing is well known by now. (Wish we spotted it before release.)

Here's the fix: http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/10157-savegame-problems/page__st__25__p__200204entry200204

(...which I believe will be part of the next version of Dark Mod, 1.1, if I'm not mistaken; if you want to wait for that.)

Well, perhaps tricky is the wrong word.

It took me a few tries to figure out a precise hiding location that worked, is all. :) There are some positions around that corner where you can hide and some where you can't, and they don't look a lot different, as far as I remember. You're skirting on the edges of detectability in any case.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
