TDM Fan Mission Lists: Released and Upcoming

I don't agree. I think the soul of the thief series is not a special mission type, but it's variety. In most games all missions normally follow the same concept. This is a bit different in thief, which makes it interesting.

Well like all forms of art it is subjective to how the user sees it. For me the soul of thief is being able to sneak around mansions/cities/houses and watching people live their lives completely unaware of my existance, when they least expect it I jump out of the shadows and steal jewels, gold, purses, etc and then before they realize its gone i've vanished back into the shadows.

That whole feeling of just being this elite thief and evading gaurds is what entices me about the thief world. However very recently I have started to take an appreciation for more supernatural/undead themed levels because in a way it's a similar concept except instead of guards and people you are avoiding these creatures to steal from a crypt something that they are either bound to protect or just happen to be there.

For the longest time I never really cared much for horror in thief but a couple of recent thief 2 fm's changed that for me.

Don't forget The Phrase Book.

Haven't played it yet, but now I will! Actually, I should probably do the Thomas Porter stuff in order. Having already played Glenham out of order, I should go back and do it proper.

As the summer wraps up, it seemed like a good time to post another one of these. We definitely have seen a spike in missions since TDM went standalone last year (hasn't even been a year yet...? Feels like forever).

I count 87 missions total.

Seems at a good level. 4-5 mission releases is enough for my personal stealth fix. :)

Well, no, not really. However, if we would get people to be motivated to create small missions instead of overhelmingly large ones, we may even raise the bar.

I've seen quite a lot of very impressive shots of people who never released a mission sadly. One of my personal favorites is Johannes Burock. Especially the sewer pics/video he uploaded once were extremely impressive.

It's sad that we see such potential never shaping out in a nice, small and, most important, released FM.

Maybe another Newbie Mapping contest could push it a bit forward, with some sort of size limitations like in some of the T1/T2 contests. (Have been discussed before, I know. Just wanna bring this up again.)

Don't knock 87 missions (and counting!). It's an intimidating, or exciting, number for someone just discovering TDM. I've played about 1/4 of the missions, and I may never catch up entirely. There's probably only a handful of diehards and/or mappers who have played them all, and to whom the pace of new missions is too slow. And, frankly, I started playing TDM instead of T2 FMs because the huge number of T2 FMs was too intimidating. I assumed finding the "best" and most unique would be too exhausting, so I came to the community with the less intimidating number. As it stands, aside from the unofficial expansion (T2X), I've never played a T2 FM.

More is better, yes. But there are benefits to being the little guy, so to speak.

I agree on the small mission thing - although mine typically end up as medium-sized by the time I am done with them. If we had people releasing one of those every month or two, it would really complement the large missions which tend to come from this community.

A newbie contest is probably not practical. There are probably not that many posters who might just decide to take up DR if we announced one.

@Digi: You have an interesting point there. And yes, the hug amount of FM's released for T1/T2 can be overwhelming for someone who just discovered them. But they are getting released for around 15 years now.

I also don't want to argue that it is neccessary to release as much missions as possible. I just think that there are some good authors (like _Johannes mentioned above) who never release anything. This is not bad, they don't have to. But if you take a look at the screenies they have uploaded in the past, it is just a shame that this potential gets lost.

@Melan: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand yet another valid point. We could scrap that newbie thingie. But a contest with a limitation in size may be worthwhile.

Btw.: I consider most of your missions as large ;)

There appears to be a lot of clutter on the "upcoming mission" list, missions that have no delivery date, and were last updated years ago.

Can the authors be contacted and asked if they still plan to finish?

If no further work is planned, the mission should be removed from the list and perhaps what they've done can be donated to the "unfinished missions repository".

The list can be edited by anyone with wiki access. It's been a long while since I surveyed the "What are you working on" thread for new entries though. I probably should go back through and find new ones.

I like not-so-large missions. I think my favorite mission so far of the four I've played is A Score to Settle, which I thought was refreshingly concentrated and intense. (Btw Springheel, was the setting of your mission modeled on old East End London? The main villain felt a bit like a Kray-type psychopathic London crim.)

Not entirely on topic, how is the volume of FMs being produced these days for the original Thief trilogy? I skipped right to TDM after playing through the first three games so I am not familiar with that scene at all.

Glad you liked it. London was certainly an influence, especially with the names, although the most direct influence was actually a plotline about rival gangs in the HBO Rome series.

As for FM volume, there was a thread about it somewhere.....ah: http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/16858-stealth-fms/

So far this year we have only seen 3 original releases. I should have the accountant 2 and another smaller mission out before the years end which would bring the total to 5 but that seems to be a big drop from the previous year.

Do any other authors expect a release of their FM before the years end? It seems like things are a bit quiet otherwise

My debut mission is approaching the stage where things are either satisfactory or sufficiently troublesome to change that I'd be better off just learning from them for the future. I've just been working on items instead lately, because monsterclipping is dull.

Did you see the quality on those things? Quality > Quantity

You can call me Phi, Numbers, Digits, Ratio, 16, 1618, or whatever really, as long as it's not Phil.

The majority of the releases last year were quality as well and there was more of them. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying flood the market or anything but it is a low number.

I intend to release... uh... 3. By the end of the year. One is 90% done, the other is like 60% done and the other I'm just starting. I jump around a lot. I was making something with Kyyrma, then he dropped out for work, so I'm planning on finishing the final 10% alone. I made a monastery that was supposed to be the third mission of Quinn Co, but felt it didn't fit well with what I originally wanted the campaign to be, so I've recently started a new one. I've got one big building done of that, but I've no idea how big it's going to be so far. But yeah, one map finishable in a week when I bother, one map maybe a fortnight of work, and another maybe a month or two, but the first two won't be done until that is.

tl;dr I'm bad at sticking to one project so a bunch are coming out at once, but not early in the year.

There are a couple big mapping projects in the works I'm aware of...don't know that they'll make the end of this year though.

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
