Linux updater binary is broken

I just created and uploaded a new update that has a "--noselfupdate" option, so you can use it to update to v1.02 without getting the broken updater again. (It seems this time the 64bit version doesn't want to work *sigh*).

We probably need to create two versions, one for 32bit and one for 64bit.

Update continues to fail for me...

My System is Ubuntu 10.4. I tried several updaters linked via the front page and the forums, including the perl-script. I installed the libarchive-zip-perl package.

Here is what tdm_update.linux (from April, 30th 2010) says:

IO object version 1.25 does not match bootstrap parameter 1.23_01 at /usr/lib/perl/5.10/DynaLoader.pm line 219.

Compilation failed in require at /usr/lib/perl/5.10/IO/Handle.pm line 9.

BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/lib/perl/5.10/IO/Handle.pm line 9.

Compilation failed in require at /usr/lib/perl/5.10/IO/Seekable.pm line 9.

BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/lib/perl/5.10/IO/Seekable.pm line 9.

Compilation failed in require at /usr/lib/perl/5.10/IO/File.pm line 11.

BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/lib/perl/5.10/IO/File.pm line 11.

Compilation failed in require at -e line 352.

Maybe it is worth mentioning the files on my hardrive are still TDM 1.00 and I moved them temporary on a ntfs-drive while building a new machine.

Any ideas?

Erg. I assume the above was with the build updater on bloodgate? What does the Perl script say?

Could you try downloading this one, and then run it with:

perl ./tdm_update.pl --noselfupdate

Right-click, save as: http://bloodgate.com/mirrors/tdm/pub/tdm_update.txt then rename to "tdm_update.pl"

Thanks, here's the output:

user@puter:~/.doom3/darkmod$ perl ./tdm_update.pl --noselfupdate

Can't locate Config/Tiny.pm in @INC (@INC contains: lib devel/lib /etc/perl /usr/local/lib/perl/5.10.1 /usr/local/share/perl/5.10.1 /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.10 /usr/share/perl/5.10 /usr/local/lib/site_perl .) at ./tdm_update.pl line 16.

BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at ./tdm_update.pl line 16.

I wonder what's wrong. As far as I remember I didn't change anything with the vanilla perl setup except the addtional package mentioned before. It is a 32-bit Ubuntu 9.10 upgraded to 10.4

edit: added a package called libconfig-tiny-perl. Updater seems to work now but I'll have to wait for the DL to finish...

edit2: seems to run fine now, briefly checked the training mission. The Menu says TDM 1.02. :)

So I think the problem really was that the updater depends on something from the aforementioned package which seems to be not included in a vanilla Ubuntu install.

The "compiled" updater seems not to work on Ubuntu 10.04 as it was build on 9.10 and therefore has wrong libs somehow (or that is what I gather). The script I gave you needs the extra lib as you noted, sorry, forgot to tell you.

Maybe I should instead just write a small shell script which pulls down the libs and the updater, and then runs it.. Ah the joys of crossplatform-crossversion programming.. *sigh*

I just wanted to drop by and say... how's that perl eh? ;)

The "perl" runs, it is just that the "make a compiled binary from Perl script" thingy is crap. But feel free to rewrite whatever in whatever.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
