Patently Dangerous problems

For some reason I've been having problems with this mission. All others have run fine on my comp including Return to the City. When I load it up it always starts and I'm usually able to play for 10 or 15 min. however at some point, my comp will just freeze up and I have to ctr alt delete to get out of it saying Doom 3 is not responding.

I deleted the original file and downloaded the mission again, but still having the same problem. Do I need to delete my old save games and start from the beginning?

What are your system specs? (Incl graphics card.)

Are you running it on the newest version of TDM?

Nothing in the FAQ or Performance Tweaks looked familiar did it?

Does it freeze when you're outside?

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

I have a dual core Athlon 2.3, 3 gigs of ram and an 8600GT. Yes it's the newest version of TDM, (just updated today as well), and I did look at the faq. I don't think it's performance as I was able to run Return to the City and 5 other missions all without problems. I initially thought it was only outside areas, however the last crash was indoors at the warehouse.

I'll try and lower the settings and see if that works, as I am pretty dense when it comes to mods.

I was actually curious if the FM had any issues with the newest version of TDM. But no one else has reported it so ... not sure that's it.

Well, having it occur at very different places makes it look like some general thing instead of a specific trigger (except maybe the ambient sound system? Does it happen at transition kinds of places?). But if it's general / non-locational it'd be hard to pin down.

I don't know either; I'm not very good at tracking stuff like this down.

Sometimes helps to dig through other FM threads and look for other reports of crashes that look familiar and see how they resolved it.

I hope you figure it out because I'd like people to enjoy my FM.

Just loaded it up again, and finished the main objectives. No problems this time for some strange reason. I just played for a good 1/2 hr. Now to

get out of the warehouse without being detected. (although not sure, am I supposed to kill the murderer?)

I think as usual I did some things backwards, so once I get out, going to go back and see what I may have missed.

BTW; Excellent mission! This is only the second mission where I was able to do some Thief's highway stuff. Took me a while to find out how to really get going in the mission, but once I did it was the usual; duh!

You don't have to

kill

him, but just notice the

key on his belt

. Also, have you been inside Soren's Lab yet, on the 2nd floor of his house? That's the only other big thing.

It was designed to do the 2 big parts

(Soren's lab & the warehouse)

in either order, so you can't really do anything "backwards". As long as you're making progress and getting the objectives, like Fidcal said, you're doing good.

Yes, I've been to all those places and in the process of finishing up now. I think what made this mission so good is the element of something a bit different than just going in, stealing something and getting out. While that was still the basic idea of it, the story took center stage and it was fantastic having some elements of horror as well.

I'm really looking forward to more missions that focus more on story, and hopefully we'll get them soon. I'm running out the missions to play!

Maybe I have it wrong, but did you just say it is possible to get

first to the warehouse without being in the lab before?

My impression was that the way is pretty linear.

I just finished the mission (well, last night) and it was really great. The coolest I played so far. But I think I leave my full comment in the main thread...

It might not be so obvious, but sure it's possible.

When you're on Harlan's roof, you can either hop down to the lamp hanging off Harlan's wall and jump across that way OR jump straight to the awning over Soren's door if you get the angle right. Then you can go to Damuddy's house & the warehouse first, then visit Soren's lab afterwards ... And the readables & new-objective-trigger still work right so the story logic still "works" right in that order. Just a little thing, really, but it's possible and makes it a little less linear.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
