Can't load missions [solved]

This is weird. I have not had any problems with running missions in TDM, but now that I installed Awaiting the Storm, I am experiencing problems not just with this mission, but others as well. Here is what happens:

1) The mission installs properly

2) When it is started, everything seems to be OK up to selecting objectives

3) When the mission is loading, the progress bar goes about 1/8 of the way, and then returns me to either the objective selection screen or (on one occasion) the title screen

4) After this, trying to reload the mission produces this error message: "Joint 'Hips' not found for attachment position 'hip_sheath_l' on entity 'barkeep'" (or another AI depending on the mission).

I don't know if the problem is mission-specific or not, but now the same happens no matter which mission are try. What should I do? Restarting my PC didn't work, and tdmupdater says my install is up to date.

Sounds like some kind of update conflict. What version number shows at bottom left of the main menu? And have you been testing 1.02 or still got the current 1.01? Have you updated since 1.01? I'm just wondering if some files got crossed over somehow.

This is version 1.01, haven't been testing 1.02. I have run the updater to see if a file might have been altered, but nope, it checks all as "ok".

Plus until now, the mod worked just fine.

That error usually indicates a problem with the tdm_ai_guard_proguard_devel.def file. Not sure how that would happen given what you've described, however.

In that case, Melan, can you check you have tdm_ai_humanoid_guards01.pk4 in your darkmod folder. If so, can you open it with a zip program and in its def folder should be tdm_ai_guard_proguard_devel.def. If so, does it open in a plain text editor? What date and time is it?

There is a file like that, and it opens all right. The date stamp is 2010. 02. 28, 13:22.

[edit]Although note, the error message indicated an AI named "barkeep" (and in a different mission, a normal guard), not a proguard[/edit]

All humanoids use the same animations, which are stored in that file. But I see no way it would be compromised by installing a mission.

I don't have any good ideas on this atm.

I finally solved the problem. Since the pk4s were all originals with no sign of a change, I decided only DoomConfig.cfg or gamex86.dll could have been to blame. After deleting those files and running the updater to get new ones, missions load correctly. So it is something to do with one of these two, although what exactly is anybody's guess. In any case, thank you for your suggestions!

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
