Essential Missions

Recommended Posts

Hey, I'm rather new to this mod, and as a longtime lover of thief, I really want to get into the game. However, the sheer number of missions available is a bit intimidating, anyone have any advice as to what missions are an "essential download?" Advice and input of any kind would be fantastic, thanks for your time!

Boy that's a loaded question!

I don't know if you can trust my judgment as I only came into TDM via a fond recollection of playing Thief 2 on a friend's PC back in college... but here's my newbie top missions:

1) Trapped!

2) Patently Dangerous

3) Awaiting the Storm

4) The Outpost

5) Business as Usual

6) The Tears of Saint Lucia

7) Too Late

I think my list is biased for missions that run well on my ancient rig...

Special Mention:

No Honor Among Thieves

This is the most beautiful set of mission yet released! I cant really chime in on game-play too much because I am still fussing with trying to get them to run well... I suspect when I upgrade my CPU that this campaign will take the number one spot...

(But it will have a tough fight for number one, with Bikerdude's upcoming FMS... )

If you can run the NHAT campaign well, you may also enjoy Melan's "Return to the City" which is actually more playable on my rig than NHAT 3/3 but lost it's crown as the prettiest one...

(again, Return to the City would probably rank higher if it was more merciful on my hardware...)

(I haven't run into an FMS that I didn't like so... listening to me is like listening to Homer Simpson as a food critic... :))

My answer is that there are only ~20 missions (a couple of trainers), and they are all good, so I'd just play them through -- maybe by release date? That's as good a recommendation as any.

Many were xmas contest missions and the like so they are "small" and will therefore go all too quickly. You'll be glad to have all ~20, because the mod is fantastic and I only wish there were 40... or 50... which, hopefully by the end of the year there will be!:)

Yeah, play 'em all. But if I were you I'd start with the trainer to learn the basics. Then go on to play some of the smaller FMs (you can tell by the filesize quoted in MB on the download site.) just to get more used to Dark Mod. If you play any of the Den series then obviously start with the first and work through in order so the story is in sequence.

Yeah, there are too few missions and most of the FMS authors are friends as far as I can see..., so you would need an inconsiderate newb like me to point out which ones are the "best"  (and us newbs will probably steer you in the wrong direction )

...there are 1,387 members, someone out there should have some opinions... (it feels like an echo chamber in here sometimes  )

If you just want a mission to start out and get a feel of the mod, try one of the smaller ones. I suggest Thieves, Outpost or Trapped; all three are relatively straightforward but perfect to practice the new features. Of course, don't forget to play the training mission that comes bundled with the map if you haven't done it yet.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
