Trouble installing missions

Hi guys,

I am having trouble with the fan missions. I am running the dark mod in linux (ubuntu 10.04 64 bit) and I seem to have it installed properly. At least I can get to the menus with no problem. However I can't see the fan missions. I put the pk4 files in the fms folder as explained in the tutorial, but they do not show up when I get into the game. There seems to be no way to install them. Is this a known problem for linux? Is there a workaround?

No worries - there must be a workaround. Does the training mission show in the list? If so, perhaps there was a download error with an FM but seems unlikely if you downloaded two or more.

For now, the only other thing I can think of is try opening one of the pk4s with a zip program just to check they didn't get corrupted. I'm sure someone will come up with a solution soon. Maybe a path oddity or Linux case conflict. I thought I'd heard of this one before but can't see anything in the wiki FAQ.

I'm sure you must have patched doom3 because I think Dark Mod doesn't run at all without it. But just check you have DOOM 1.3.1.1304 at bottom right of the console.

Anyway, hang on and somebody with a Linux system will come up with a solution.

A couple of questions:

1) What is the name of the directory where Doom 3 is installed?

2) Which user owns the FMS directory?

3) Which user owns the Doom 3 executable?

4) Did you install TDM's SVN for some reason (see below)?

Please visit TDM's IndieDB site and help promote the mod:

(Yeah, shameless promotion... but traffic is traffic folks...)

Be amazingly unlikely if it were a cracked SVN (unless it is a member who has an alternate user name? hehe)

It also might be an upate problem. If you downloaded Dark Mod I assume it is updated with the latest update. But anyway, if you ran tdm_update it can sometimes be incomplete so you finish up with either corrupt files or part of one update and part of another. If there is conflict it might be a possible cause. Though I think it unlikely it is always worth running tdm_update again to make sure it says it is up to date.

Hey guys. Thanks for answering so quickly. I appreciate it. Here are the answers:

1) Installed doom3 to /home/TpnySmith/Games/Doom3

2) TpnySmith owns the user directory.

3) TpnySmith owns the doom3 executable.

4) I installed the dark mod version 1.02 using the torrent file.

No 4 is perhaps the problem. I could not get the auto updater to work (some problem with the perl libraries used by the update program or something. At least I could not figure it out), and the torrent seemed like the easiest solution. The pk4 directories seems fine when I open them with an archiver so I doubt they are the problem. And doom3 is at version 1.3.1. You guys think I should try another torrent?

Hi guys,

I figured out what the problem was. As I said before I had doom3 installed to the folder "/home/TpnySmith/Games/Doom3".

Also the darkmod files were located in the folder "/home/TpnySmith/Games/Doom3/darkmod". I moved all files to the folder

"/home/TpnySmith/.doom3" and then it worked fine.

I never thought of doing this as Doom 3 works fine when installed to any folder in my home directory. It does not have to be

in the ".doom3" folder. This usually only contains the configuration files and the cdkey.

Anyway, thanks for the replies guys. I appreciate the help.

I'd like to add this to the wiki FAQ but I don't understand how to describe it. Are you saying that under Linux Doom3 must be installed to a folder named .doom3 or Dark Mod FMs do not show?

What is the significance of the dot at the start of the folder name?

I think, maybe, all this ".doom3" stuff starts in the "DarkModGlobals.cpp" source @ line 292

#else // LINUX

std::string iniPath =
	std::string(getenv("HOME")) + "/.doom3/darkmod/darkmod.ini";

Which propagates to profilePath

const char* profilePath = iniPath.c_str();

And then further into the Globals and such...

if((pfh = OpenProfile(profilePath, TRUE, FALSE)) == NULL)

...

PROFILE_HANDLE *OpenProfile(const char *Path, BOOL CaseSensitive, BOOL bCreate)

ETA:

BTW, if greebo or any of the coders are reading this, my "Musing" (thread in the "Off Topic" section) today is really a question for one of y'all; hoping you might answer with something like:

  • That's a perfectly legitmate preprocessor directive, you're just old...

or

  • That's some GD MS construct, and you are right to be asking "why? why!? why???!!!"

Thanks.

      i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
      tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

      Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

      I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
      Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

      Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
