well done, Kreator Of Most Astonishing Gameplay! Very memorable and funny FM. We taffers are heretics between gamers, we dont live another live in WOW, we dont count frags in CS, we rather sneak around in darkness... but we have such heretics even within our own heresy, and its good... this will for sure be most inspiring entry of whole contest. Thanks.

A real unique mission that I enjoyed very much. It's totally different from what I've ever seen. Vertical use is the best IMO. The thing that wasn't really there was a story but I didn't mind it that much because it was so much fun to figure out where to go next. When I saw that you released a FM (unexpected for me) I had high hopes and it certainly wasn't a let down. Great job!

To get the crown...

If you are the top near the rope arrows, look around a little lower than you and notice the second launcher platform (you used one to get launched all the way up to the top area, this second one looks just like it).

Ride a rope arrow around the top rotating ring, jump off on the platform above the second launcher, carefully wind your way down, and use the launcher to help you "reach" the crown!

Thanks Komag.

"on-the-fly grab" is crazy.

Not my type of mission at all. That being said, it was a true showcase of the DarkMod's power. I find myself wishing I could give it a higher score because I think it blew the other missions away in the second category. Thanks for the mission Komag, this one was a doozie :)

Doesn't some texture artist want to do something about this?

I'll do something about that if it's needed for my mission.

Wow. Just wow. This is mario 64 meets thief :D.

I had a lot of fun playing until I got to the top and realised I couldn't get the crown that way >sad.gif

I would have put some rings on the arc that the chair throws you along to indicate that you need to get up that way. Or at least have a little prompt are there that tells me I'm wasting my time trying to get the crown by climbing on the rotating thing and trying to climb down the chain to the crown sad.gif

Otherwise, cool! I've never been on something so awesome :P

Wow! Tummy's still swirling and turning.wacko.gif This may not have been your usual theif mission but what a challange. Way to go Komag. Using a lot of baby steps and even more quick saves I managed to get it all. Whew.

Think I'll keep my feet on some good old fashioned terra firma for awhile.laugh.gif

Who's the mantle master that's a mission machine to all the taffers? KOMAG! Ya damn right!

I mean, there is little story to speak of but this is clearly the best vertical mission ever. If it doesn't pan out in the votes we should give it an honorary technical achievement award (see creative arts emmy's heheh). Can someone upload a youtube video of this swing?

Gotta love the woosh of wind that the swing makes near the bottom. Great FPS in this swing too, I guess physics / rotating non-animated things are really easy on the engine.

Stalled the merry-go-round wheel using a rope arrow. Stalled the top wheel by standing up, rope arrowed down to the thin spiral staircase. Then used the catapult to get to a location I had already been to. Narrowly missed the waterspout/chain a few times which I guess I'm supposed to climb. Oh and mistook the generator at the end of the spinning log as a chest and wasted time going back there.

7 bottles so far.

You finally made something more complex and bewildering than your blue room in Mind Master, lol. Congratulations (,^^)-b

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Hm, yes, very unique. But fun? Sorry. I got to the top eventually, with help of a 50+ quickloads (well, I didn't count them, but it was a lot!). How's that fun? I have more than enough bottles, but was standing on the top rather disappointed. I didn't get the crown then, and (shame on me!) noclipped there since I simply lost my nerve for more quickloads. That's why it was no fun and frustrating for me. Vertical use, of course was masterly and there's no doubt that this mission set standards for all other authors, but IMHO it's a showcase mission. So how could I be disappointed? 'Showcase' is simply not what I hoped for. And that is the only reason why I was disappointed in terms of gameplay and story.

Well you get to hear the arnold schwarzenegger-esque death noise each time. And you get to see a cool fall (something that was a bit lacking in that airship mission). But it's the challenge that makes it worth trying for the top.

Congrats on the release Komag!

I'll give it a go through once SVN is done updating

I'm going to abstain from voting on this one.

Running and jumping are two things I have been unable to master since platforms first came out. Mario, Donkey Kong, and I have never gotten along.

After falling off the second swing 10 times, I decided not to torture myself, and bailed out.

I recently finished a Half-Life mod called The Trap, which was absolutely excellent, and I was looking for more puzzle oriented gameplay in teh back of my head somewhere when checking through modding sites. Never had I thought I'd find it here!

This is an absolutely ridiculous and funny mission. I had such a laugh at all the horrifying things I had to do and once I got up on the platform and first heard the *woosh* I just got a wide grin on my face, And the ridiculous jumps needed were just so absurd to see with the winging background and moving parts.

The story is a bit silly and only made it better, I can't see a proper story for this one that wouldn't be bad. So story wise it's pretty okay too.

It was quite difficult, I must say, and I got lost a few times. But all in all it was extremely fun, very good use of the vertical element and mantling!

Gotta love the woosh of wind that the swing makes near the bottom. Great FPS in this swing too, I guess physics / rotating non-animated things are really easy on the engine.

It's only the 'skybox' that rotates, so what moves is actually pretty simple terrain wise. It's a little noticeable as someone said the crate doesn't bounce/slide off and rope arrows don't arc out weird like they would if you were actually moving.

But I think that's part of the genious of it. You're not moving but the background makes you feel like you are, it makes you wary and scared and totally throws off your balance if you concentrate on it other than the wood beams around you that don't move. I don't think the engine has any trouble at all with moving, rotating or animated objects.

But of course collision is cpu heavy. So if there were a bunch of crates sliding and bouncing the whole time you'd see an FPS drop. As it is though there are no collisions happening. At most there's the drum rolling under the player. I even think you'd get good performance on a map with a moving swing, though due to contest sizes it wouldn't have worked.

Doom seems pretty good about attachments, So having a massive moving swing with moving parts should be completely doable with much FPS loss I'd think. Might make it tougher though as the player might actually start to slide when the swing is at top most position, making those really skinny stairs and planks even tougher.

about construction of moving swing

I first built a swing that actually swings, just for a quick physics test, and it just doesn't work well at all. The player starts sliding and floating and you can't control anything well, not to mention you can't mantle at all because mantling is only stationary (so if you mantled, you would suddenly stop moving and the whole swing would fly away out from under you during the mantle animation). There were various other problems as well, it just wasn't feasible.

*sigh* Gladly I´m already sick, so I was ready for this mission. I spent 43 minutes and found all the bottles and only got hurt on the very first jump. On three points during the mission I thought "Come on, quit, you don´t like this kind" but then I figured out how to go on and the little success-steps on the way up made it fun and the swing-architecture was impressive.

The sonic-seats were the best and the part where you have to shoot a rope-arrow into the rotating thing, that was cool.

@Jdude: So, you got the crown due to rope-swinging? I wasn´t able to do that, and it wasn´t intended that way either, was it?

The last/lowest bottle was the hardest because I only had one rope-arrow left so I got back up where the second arrow was stuck and got the another way down via the rooftop of that ugly house.

I spent at least 10 minutes trying to find a way to lower the bridge to the exit! I even went back up to the chains and searched for a hidden switch before I got the idea to just go the intended exit... ohmy.gif

Gameplay: Good

Was fun, although I don´t like this kind of gameplay/missions I didn´t fall into death very often. But I have to say that most of the Player-death-sounds are not very deadly, they sound more like a very hard climbing-act...

These Sonic-seats as I call them were the best fun-part and made me repeat that part again while I was stuck a little. smile.gif

Overall it was not too hard and I never got frustrated so you balanced your mission very well, KoMaG.

Appearance: Good

First I voted 'Tolerable' but thinking again about the swing-architecture and 'Vertical Use' I raised that vote again. ('Vertical Use' fits for me more into the GamePlay-vote) Still I can´t say I like it, this whole place doesn´t fit and the beginning area was the worst. Also that house there made no sense and was very ugly, maybe that was intended to amplify the madness, I don´t know. A long time I thought that behind the bridge the mission will really begin and will become more in-depth, but as I saw the crown I knew...

Story: Poor

It´s a fun mission, but even fun-missions can benefit from good (funny) stories. The only story here was the story between the briefing-lines, and that could´ve needed more depth because it was as confusing as the whole setting of this map.

As someone said before, it´s a Showcase of what TDM offers. I would like to see little parts shown here inside serious future missions where it fits. So, no, I don´t hope to see future missions set up like this. The thing that was missing here was a real mission around this room.

Well, overall it was still fun and wasn´t boring and hey, tis was the first time I found all the loot in a TDM-mission, I think! :)

Oh, what about that video showing the way down to the ground? Would like to see that too!

Yeah, not for everyone, that's for sure. But it's a shame you didn't at least get past that very tiny beginning part, just to get "outside" and at least SEE the rest (it's all visible at that point), even if you didn't do any of it! You might try again just at least that much (or do a brief "noclip" just to fly across the first are with the three swings) :)

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
