About Choice

Hi,

I would like to take a note on choice, i've noticed poeple argue about using either a Sword or a Dagger, just as a suggestion would it make sense on the purchase screen for items (if there is one) to have the choice of a sword or dagger? I mean think of it, I like to run around and duel with guards but I also like in thief 3 carrying a dagger backstabing looked cool and well made me rely more on stealth:ph34r:, in truth I prefer the dagger, but in my opinion to solve a problem why not have it so the Player/User chooses at the beginning of a mission whether he/she wants to use a dagger or sword. It would help put a problem to rest to have a choice of one or the other at the begnngin of a mission an then everyone is happy.Think of it this way a Thief uses what he can and adapts, so having both would be a benefit! I just thought i would say this as a suggestion.

Although I realize that would take some character motions to do which may be time consuming but why not? As I said just a suggestion.

PS. I am glad you guys are using Doom 3 as a engine because I currently use Linux an It would be kick ass to see this game on linux. I own Cedega just so I can play thief 1 an 2 on linux but natively for the dark mod would be Cool to play, all i have to do is buy doom 3 now! which was on my agenda!)

Alright, I'm not a fool - this is one of you guys signing up with a new nick just to bait me right?

No one in reality could genuinely be this ignorant and uncouth. I'd rather quit now that think someone like this was going to be despoiling the game, or you were going to listen to anyting he has to vomit.

Nice try though

Also keep in mind that each weapon we include is going to take time to model and animate. If someone wants to walk around "stealthily" taking out guards with a morning star or a cast iron frying pan or what have you, they'll probably have to model and animate that themselves.

That may be true about the additional code etc... and degsign. Although It would be nice to have both, Idon't like swords cause they feel big and bulky, even though the original thief had it, All I am saying just to satisfy both types of players, if not heres another suggestion, use a shortsword, Garrett Used a longsword in thief 1 and 2 and in thief 3 he used a Dagger... just go inbetween if that helps? Mind you all i am givng are just suggestions, Shortsword might even make more sense because he could guard/block with it an yet do some amount of damage. Then again who knows what will come about.

I could be crazy too, just when you held it up to block it looked a bit short

Another example of how short/long it is can be gathered in-game when you go through the tutorial at the beginning (look at it laying on the table), and looking at the hovering Constantine sword.

I think having both would be awesome.

I remember playing Thief 3 and walking into the armory on the first real level thinking gee whiz I wish I oculd pick up one of these swords... That would be a really worthwhile thing to do.

*puts on his oDDity hat*

Why would that be worthwhile? You want to quietly infiltrate your target and get out with no one the wiser, and you think it would be worthwhile to grab a huge bulky, shiny longsword, and somehow carry it in a way that's not awkward and noisy, just so you can maybe last maybe 5 seconds longer in a duel with a guard that trains sword combat day in and day out?

When do we ever see them train in the original games? I've always just seen them standing around either drunk or wondering when they were going to get their dinner. ;)

My impression on most of the guards in the original Thief series was not that they were very well trained. Usually they seemed to be average persons who hired as guards because it mostly is an easy job and save money. There are some of them which make a better impression, but most of them are not "highly trained and deadly swordsman" IMO.

I think there should be a varying amount of guard AI, some that are stupid and clumsy (Benny) and some that are average, some women, some fairly well trained commanders (the Captain from the Mage Towers)....

Captain Regalio I think he was named :D

Yep, in the Mod we have amatuer guards, professional guards, and then the ones you REALLY don't want to piss off....

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
