Not really likely; look how far OpenDarkEngine went (hint: not too far).
Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

True, but that was with one full time coder and help from maybe one other guy. Everyone suddenly came out of the woodwork when the T2 source appeared. Some that I didn't even know could code. People were just more interested in playing in the dark engine code than the challenge of creating a new version of it.

They aren't comparable situations anyway. It's a completely different ballgame between coding every system from scratch, the equivalent of writing dozens to a few hundred .cpp files each with hundreds of lines with no guidance, vs. having all of those files already in-hand and just trying to get it to compile, with only a handful of needed files to have to write with lots of guidance. I think the ambition of those two tasks are on entirely different scales.
