Dungeon Keeper 2:

Oh wow!

I loved those games, and would really like to play them once more..

But.... Is that legal?

This is considered abandonware and free to share for the following reasons:

  • You cannot buy this anywhere in the world
  • The makers have abandoned the IP (Dungeon Keeper)
  • The game is over 6 years old

If you own copyright to this material and wish for the download to be removed, please contact us.

Technically no, not in most places. At the same time however places like the US have provisions in the DMCA which actually allows a lot of abandonware practices (such as porting, patching and reversing most things for archival use). The IP itself is almost never released to the public domain however (there are also a lot of places which don't have a "public domain"), as such you're still violating IP laws... but once again depending on where you are in the world, the commercial withdrawal of a product can make fighting this impossible and is seen as unenforceable.

If you're not distributing them on a purely commercial basis, pretty much no one cares :)

Apparently the sons of one of my teachers (also good friend of my mother) worked on DK2. (At least I thought I saw that; Apparently DK2 was a Brit game and this was in Dallas. But he had the box on his desk and said he worked on it, so who knows...)

We had lunch with them one time and toured his office (works for another game company now) and got to talk about the life of a game dev.

It got me down how much everything they were doing today was casual gaming though. Bioshock had just come out and I wanted to talk about that and the future of FPS, and Dark Mod of course. But he was talking about browser and Facebook games. Depressing...

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Actually, this is kind of a totally different Dungeon Keeper game. While the graphics side is a revamped DK2, the game mechanics are totally screwed up. For example, you don't just kill the heroes that are storming your dungeon, but rather you have to please them by giving them what they long for. Like: Mages want to find libraries full of new spells, knights want monsters to fight against etc. When they are sufficiently pleased, you grab them and throw them into the prison to suck off their soul energy.

Yes, this is as ridiculous as it sounds, and the Metacritic score reflects this. I really hope that fans will release a Back to the Roots kind of mod that restores the original game mechanics. In that case I'd gladly buy this game. Until then, it's not worth bothering with it.

Whoa! How can they screw up something that bad. All they needed to do was to take the best out of DK2, add a few improvements and new monsters and people would have been totally sold.. Shame, I almost even considered checking this game out.

It's understandable they want to be original, otherwise it's just a little too much of a DK clone. In this case, though, I think people would rather have the clone, lol.

BTW, another DK-type of game I like is Lock & Key, which is an Interactive Fiction version of dungeon building, then a hero runs through it and you hope your traps & monsters stop him. It's more like a glorified puzzle game, but funny.

Unfortunately, those guys are not nearly anywhere close to even an alpha version, while "Dungeons" is already out. Still, I do hope that the Overworld guys will show the same patience as the TDM team.

Dungeons is nothing like Dungeon Keeper (got it sitting here, I know this from first hand experience). Dungeons is like sim-dungeon. You don't control your minions, you only control the dungeon lord, and you have to manually go around and kill the heroes yourself to get the life energy. It's.... not remotely what I was expecting, given all the Dungeon Keeper spiritual successor nonsense that was thrown around before release.

Tl;dr

Dungeons is NOT Dungeon Keeper, it is sim-dungeon.

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
