qer_trans in DarkRadiant

the qer_trans parameter was absent for from gtkradiant for a while but it has been added back and is working beautifully

my reasons for needing this are beyond the scope of this topic but I am curious now that it is working in GTKRadiant again. Is there any plan to reimplement it in DarkRadiant? Or even better yet could someone point me in the right direction to getting it working myself? I'm learning C++ and I certainly would welcome a challenge to cut my teeth on but I have to be honest I don't even know where to begin with this one.

Even better still, Greebo I would really like to get in to contact with you about something I have been working on that is directly related to this inquiry. Is there anyway we could get in to contact by maybe private message?

There is the "translucent" global shader keyword, is this the same you're referring to? I seem to recall that qer_trans is specific to Quake 3?

Since the keyword is unknown to Doom 3 (or maybe Quake 4), there is little chance this will be a priority, DarkRadiant is aimed to be specialised for The Dark Mod. That said, I know that XreaL is using DarkRadiant too, and by developing custom plugins it might be possible to get DarkRadiant understand that keyword.

The source is open, but I guess you already know that. DarkRadiant's renderer is rather complex so this might not be the best place to get started if you just began writing C++ - but then again I don't know if there exists anything that is easy in that codebase, so you might as well start with the renderer. :)

Btw, the translucent keyword was not working in 1.6.1, iirc, support for translucent materials has been added only recently in SVN.

Sure, either here or through the messenger, if you don't want to post it publically.

edit: I noticed that the www.qeradiant.com domain is no longer available, and I can't even reach zerowing.idsoftware.com to check out the GtkRadiant SVN logs. Is this a temporary situation or where are the GtkRadiant sources hosted now?

terribly sorry for the long delay i lost my computer to a power surge and havent been online much since am not sure about the zerowing repo outage but i did want to comment that i have personally gotten the qer_trans parameter working with doom 3 by simply creating a mod and adding the keyword to the tool shaders and in the map editor (gtkradiant that is it still doesnt seem to work in darkradiant even with my modded shaders which is actually what brought me here to begin with)) it works beautifully

this may not be very useful in doom 3 as it currently stnds but with the eminent open sourcing of the engine it could be a nice thing to have working later on

just a thought

also slightly off topic but since i have your attention i have been trying to figure out and cant seem to find the info anywhere

what version of gtk is radiant using?

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
