Blues... need I say more?

Hello, me Pusianka loyal slave of the great lord of darkness and doom bringer Master Diego, decided to share with thee the secretly forgotten type of music which has very long roots but now became very unpopular. My theory is "Blues has such an amount of awesomeness inside of it that it's overwhelming for most people to handle."

I don't want to flood you with stuff so I'm gonna gradually show stuff that I found out about blues.

First musician is my favourite Bluesman of this era - Seasick Steve. Without further ado, here one song of his:

Why is he special? Many reasons come to my mind, one practical reason is that he can play blues which is influenced by the blues roots - example:

- I really suggest to close your eyes and listen on a big speaker.

He mostly however play hard blues, but I leave this up to your own search :).

That's for starters :)

I can enjoy the blues occasionally in small doses, but my main problem with it is the standard blues chord progression - after 2-3 songs I start getting Attention Deficit Disorder (or, to put it another way, bored) and just sit there thinking "Put some different chords in". :(

Seasick Steve's had a bit of coverage in the UK, the noise he can get from a guitar with 2 or 3 strings is pretty amazing  - I really liked 'Chiggers', wasn't so keen on the second song, but I'll definitely check out more of his stuff - he's got quite a punky attitude which I like.

You forgot about one string diddly bo ;P. Music doesn't have to be complicated, it has to be melodical and have lyrics which make some sense, not just "Friday" lyrics. People laughed at it but most songs have crappy lyrics now! It has to be changed. Some very good songs that are sang nowadays were originally done for blues like:

(very bad quality of recording beware)

I've also been discovering T-Bone Walker's blues stuff (There aren't a lot of good T-Bone Shuffles on youtube)

I'm fond of the early jazz-blues movement, so I've gotta have the Duke. I suppose this piece is more of a swing than a blues, though.

I always felt the emotion in this song, old delta gospel blues.

What is the soul of a man?

Isn't that question still as profound now as ever?

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Obviously what is the soul of a woman is also a very important question.

But is a woman's soul the same thing as a man's soul?

My feminist female friend always wants to insist they are not the same...

Also, you're getting closer to revealing to us your actual gender, which you once wanted to keep ambiguous. ^_^

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

What is a soul and what information does it contain? How is the data stored, conveyed and used? To what end?

If it is immeasureable and undetectable, surely it does not exist? It becomes a matter of faith and then everyone are free to have whatever opinions they want on the topic and nobody can rationally challenge or dispute them. Everyone are correct, or alternatively, everyone are wrong. Everything melts into fuzzy and shapeless ill-defined words without exact meaning or purpose. Attempts to dig up some crystals of truth from that amorphic mess are futile.

The day you start subjecting the blues to critical scrutiny is the day you sort of miss the point...

It's supposed to express the undefinable. It's the blues, man. You just feel blue.

We can save your questions for the weekday cognitive science lectures, where the soundtrack will probably be electronica or something, some "soulless" mechanical music (not necessarily a bad thing for some music, but not the genre called for here).

But if you insist...

IMO the "soul" is no more or less than consciousness, which is an analog simulation of percepts in coded form presented to the volitional-selection systems through attentional mechanisms, for them to ignore, notice, or act on in selecting "intended" projects of action at multiple levels of scale from global to local (cf. Glimcher's "neuroeconomic" work on the LIP brain area for the connection between visual percepts and volition), in a flow of countless discrete presentation moments, a theory called functionalism, and more particularly HOT [higher order thought] theory. Functionalism means you could recreate the same consciousness in a completely different physical set-up, if the same functional structure of operations is preserved.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Blues as a music must be defineable, since the genre exists: we already could categorize it.

Sadly, I am unable to feel colors.

As for soul discussion, keep it to yourself now ;P

Aww, man! Just as this was going to be interesting. I like that kind of discussions as one always learn something new from them. Okay, I'm not derailing another thread.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
