Between these Dark Walls by Skacky

Story:

Things could potentially get messy tonight. I was on my way back home when some tough boys ambushed me. They weren't looking for money or anything, they just wanted to kill me right there in the street. Fortunately, I managed to run away unscathed, but these guys are still looking for me. I've managed to piece together something from rumours and hearsays; turns out Messer Beric, an usurer I've done jobs for in the past sold me out to Raputo, one of the City Wardens, in order to prove that he'll be loyal and pay his tributes. Apparently Beric's business collapsed with DeWall's demise, and now he seeks the protection of Raputo. Not to mention Beric's business was run right under Raputo's nose, but he was protected by DeWall at that time. In exchange for his 'good work', Beric received a priceless necklace as a reward, and keeps it stashed in his crumbling castle in Newmarket.

Now is time for some sweet revenge; I am going to steal Beric's necklace and humiliate him; that'll teach him never to double-cross me. I should also steal some valuables along the way, just to show Raputo how I deal with his reckless threats. Raputo doesn't like independents operating within his turf, so I'll make sure to plunder the neighbourhood. I got to be careful, though. With DeWall's downfall, The City became more dangerous than ever. Thugs and assassins are on the loose in the dark, and lawmen and Hammerites prowl the streets in search of heretics and criminals alike. Cragscleft has never been so full.

Notes:

Please note that due to how TG behaves with New Dark, Darkloader incorrectly identifies this FM as a T2 mission. Follow these steps if you want to load the FM with Darkloader:

  1. Install the FM in your FM archive directory as usual.
  2. Launch Darkloader and select the FM, but don't launch the mission! Instead, close Darkloader once the FM is selected and shows the T2 gear icon.
  3. In your Darkloader directory, open the file named darkloader.ini
  4. Search for darkwalls, it should be at the very end of the file.
  5. Replace the line type=2 with type=1. Save and close the file.
  6. Launch Darkloader again and the FM should appear as a TG FM with the glorious Pagan eye! You're now ready to creep through the dark and gloomy cityscape of Newmarket!

Misc:

  • For obvious reasons, it is recommended you play this FM in dark conditions. This is a major part of the experience.
  • Given that this FM has a strong focus on verticality, keep one or two rope arrows with you at all times. Three additional rope arrows can be found on all difficulty levels.
  • Explore, explore, explore and see where the twisted rooftops of Newmarket take you.
  • Make sure to read everything you come across, hints and plot elements may be written somewhere.
  • Higher difficulty means less starting gear, less equipment to be found, a higher loot goal and more opponents. The main objective remains the same.
  • It is possible to Ghost this mission and get all the loot while doing so.

Yet again Skacky has captured the old skewl feel of thief we all know and love,

I will have to install NewDark on my main PC. Looks like a mission I would love to have built.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

Play report: I think everyone owes it to him- or herself to play this mission. In terms of pure rooftop gameplay, it is one of the best FMs out there. The visual style and sound design are also great, filling the environment with dark wonder. Maybe the relative lack of readables is a weak point, but really, with such an exquisite realisation of the City, that's not a negative mark.

Anyone building missions, or developing assets for TDM should also play this and take notes. I would like to see missions like this in the future, please.

Also, the easter egg in the priest's room was amusing. Ha! :D

What is "New Dark"?

Just another name for the T2 1.19 patch

I cant get TG FMs to work on Darkloader. I'm wondering if its because I'm using the disk with all 3 Thief games on it? I have an individual disk for T1 and T2 and they work fine with Darkloader.

unzip contrib.zip in your TG folder

unzip new_dark.zip in your TG folder

add " dark1 " line in the end of cam_ext.cfg

create "patch" folder in your TG folder and place intrface.crf from Thief1/doc/T1.7z

create T2.exe (yes, you have to launch T1 via T2.exe now) shortcut and add " -fm " parameter to it

then run game from that shortcut(new fm selector will open),configure fm folder and select wanted fm

Proceed with caution!

I played this today, and it's an exceptional mission. It seems that if you exhaust your rope arrows, you might as well go home, so be careful about that.

Unfortunately, I was unable to find the item I'm supposed to find, and I've spent the last hour going back through places I've already been, with no clue where the item might be. Can't find any new places, so this is probably it for me.

grayman: Have you been to

the Keeper Sanctuary?

If you haven't,

pick the locks on the higher floors of your target's palace and look for keys that open up new places.

Grayman: Another door should also be pickable (this threw me as well for some reason).

@Melan/Gman

In the bedroom with the woman there is a key, said key allows you to get to a room with I think, another key you can use to get into the wine cellar.... and from there the fun begins...

I had already been through the wine cellar twice and considered it a dead end. This time I decided to grab and toss all the loose bottles, and in the act of doing so, accidently found a switch.

I'll proceed from there.

Thanks for the help.

I had a few problems getting this FM to work; the steps I went through (IIRC) were: -

1. New install of TDP

2. Applied the TFix patch

3. Applied the tgpatch_basic.exe patch (don't think you need this if you've already got Thief Gold)

4. Copied convict.osm from my T2 folder to the TDP folder

5. Ran the darkloader tweak (see the 'Notes' section in the OP).

All fine after that.

all you needed to do was install T1 then apply the 'newdark' update

I did that, and though I could open the mission, I couldn't get any weapons activated (the weapon icon would show in the bottom LH corner, but nothing else would happen). I posted my problem on the TTLG thread and skacky said it sounded like I was "playing with a non-TG-patched TDP".

All I know is that after a fair bit of messing around (the number & type of Thief patches out there is quite confusing), it worked after going through the above steps. Which made me very happy cuz this is a really good mission. (Maybe it's just me getting used to it, but the climbing and mantling felt much easier than the T2 FMs I've played recently. In "Better Tomorrow" and "Ominous Bequest" I felt like had an 80-90% failure rate for jumping onto things - with this one it felt like an 80-90% success rate.)

Well, it's all pretty simple really.

If you own Thief: The Dark Project (T1/TDP), you will need to install TFix and the Thief Gold patch if you want to play the FM, since it uses assets from Thief Gold that are not present with The Dark Project.

If you own Thief Gold (TG), you just need to install TFix.

The version of Thief 1 that is distributed on Steam and Good Old Games is Thief Gold, but it's not patched with New Dark, so you're gonna need to install TFix.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
