Laptop stuck on 'Resume from hibernation' screen...any suggestions?

For the last 24 hours, my lovely 9-month-old high-spec laptop has been stuck in hibernation mode, and nothing I've done so far has changed anything. Whatever I do when I power the laptop up, it comes up with the usual 'Resume from Hibernation' screen that it's always done, and then - it justs sits there. There's hard drive activity for about five seconds, and then nothing.

For the record, I've taken the battery out, and tried various combinations of i) holding the 'power on/off' button for anything from 10 - 60 seconds while connected/disconnected from the mains power; ii) powering up the laptop and then switching off the mains power; iii) hammering away at the F8 (and other F buttons) like a demented woodpecker while powering it up.

It's possible that I configured the 'power on/off' button to send the laptop into hibernation mode way back, but can't really remember as I haven't used it to power the laptop down for ages, only to turn it on. From the internet searches I've done, it sounds like it's a problem with Windows rather than the laptop (memory leaks - ? - from open programmes, espec. Firefox - ???), which, if it's the case, means a big thumbs-up to Microsoft there!!! <_<

Any suggestions very welcome!

P.S. Currently back on my old Intel HD-integrated graphics-powered Samsung, and last night relived the visual splendour of playing Glenham Tower at an average fps of about, ooh, 7 :P

As that seems to have failed, press " F8 " when windows starts loading and then choose "start windows normaly" instead of resuming.

That's the problem - it's not at the Windows boot-up stage. Windows was (is) already loaded and I had put it into hibernation (which has been working fine up to now). Now when I turn it on I get the standard "Resume from hibernation" screen - normally this flashes up for a few seconds before going straight to the desktop (or whatever I've left open), but now it just hangs on that screen. :(

I suppose you cant check to see if there's a loose cable on the harddrive, or a loose cable on the keyboard.

Not without opening it up, and as it's still under warranty, I'm not keen :unsure: . I'll contact the manufacturer and see what they have to say.

If it were not still under warranty, I'd suggest pulling the hard drive and connecting it to another computer, or use a linux live disk to boot it. Then open the drive and delete the 'hiberfil.sys' file in the root of the OS partition ('C:' in Windows). I'd also delete the 'pagefile.sys' file at the same location.

If there is no 'warranty void' sticker blocking access the the hard drive then I see no harm in doing this.

Grab yourself a Linux live CD or a Windows install disk. Boot it, mount your hard drive and move the file c:\hiberfil.sys to a new name temporarily. I'm quite sure this file is where the contents of memory are dumped when you go into hibernation. If you move it, it will force a normal boot and recreate this file.

I don't see how pulling the battery or resetting the BIOS would help you. The entire point of hibernation is that you can cut all power from a system and it will still resume from where it was. Presumably the OS checks the HDD as it boots for a previous hibernation state, tries to load it, and then is choking for some reason. Since it doesn't load successfully, it doesn't discard the hibernation state and thus the endless loop cycle.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I've tried powering it on with a Windows 7 CD, an Ubuntu install CD and a Macrium Reflect Recovery CD in the drive, but no joy. I had hopes - for a few seconds - with the Ubuntu CD, as the screen stayed black and it sounded like it was checking the CD drive, but after a slightly longer pause it still came up with the "Rfh" screen as usual.

No "Do not remove/warranty void" stickers on the bottom so PranQster's suggestion may be the way to go. Thanks for the article link as well - when the laptop does get going again, I'll remove the option to have hibernation. (It's great when it works - much faster than booting from scratch - but the thought of having this hovering me every time I use it = not good.)

That sounds like the boot from CD media failed when you tried to load the Ubuntu live disk. Any modern Linux distro should support writing to NTFS with ntfs-3g, so a live boot disk should do the trick. I have used Mageia and Mandriva for quite awhile and have been able to write to NTFS volumes since at least 2008 or 2009.

One of my regular routines for cleaning up Windows is to attach the hard drive to my laptop via USB and to run the following script:

#!/bin/bash
echo "Enter the Windows drive name to follow /media/";
echo "For example, if the drive mounts as /media/disk1/ then enter 'disk1'";
echo "To cancel, simply press [Enter]";
while read inputline
do
n="$inputline"
if [ -z "${n}" ];
then
exit
fi
rm -rf /media/${n}/Documents\ and\ Settings/*/Local\ Settings/Temp*/*
rm -rf /media/${n}/Documents\ and\ Settings/*/Cookies/*
rm -rf /media/${n}/Users/*/AppData/Local/Temp*/*
rm -rf /media/${n}/Users/*/AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/Windows/Cookies/*
rm -rf /media/${n}/System\ Volume\ Information/_restore*
rm -rf /media/${n}/System\ Volume\ Information/{*
rm -rf /media/${n}/pagefile.sys
rm -rf /media/${n}/PAGEFILE.SYS
rm -rf /media/${n}/hiberfil.sys
rm -rf /media/${n}/HIBERFIL.SYS
rm -rf /media/${n}/Windows/Temp/*
rm -rf /media/${n}/Windows/Prefetch/*
rm -rf /media/${n}/Windows/\$*
rm -rf /media/${n}/WINDOWS/Temp/*
rm -rf /media/${n}/WINDOWS/Prefetch/*
rm -rf /media/${n}/WINDOWS/\$*
rm -rf /media/${n}/RECYCLER/*
rm -rf /media/${n}/\$Recycle.Bin/*
exit
done

The '${n}' basically dumps in the volume name of the disk, such as "OS" or "TOSHIBA" or whatever the volume name is. Then 'rm -rf' does the remove command (aka delete) with options for 'recursive' (enter sub-directories) and 'force' (don't confirm).

I have used this script to successfully clean up dozens of Windows XP through Win7 drives, without any problems (which did not already occur). This makes running scans such as malwarebytes go so much quicker once the temp crap is deleted.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, it's just gone back to the manufacturer. They went through the procedure for removing the RAM and the hard drive with me over the phone last week (it was pretty easy) but somehow it still stayed stuck in hibernation, and then stopped working completely.

So who knows. May lose everything on the drive if that's the problem, but heigh-ho; lost enough HDs in my time to realise that there's usually very little that's totally irreplaceable... ^_^

      I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
