Standalone request: Machine sounds

The most important thing now is to get replacements that sound decent. If we take two weeks to make each sound perfect, we'll be ready to go standalone sometime in 2017.

First go at cpu_m3_loop:

http://beta.freesoun.../sounds/181011/

Made using a mix of these two sounds:

http://beta.freesoun...a/sounds/48353/

http://freesound.org.../sounds/138205/

which are both under the Creative Commons Attribution Licence, so if the sound is usable we'll just need to credit them.

Started working on the elevator door noises, hope to have something uploaded after the Easter break.

What do you mean by "first go"? :)

IMO it doesn't matter very much of the machine sounds sound exactly the same as the originals, as long as they're in the same ballpark. I'll add this to SVN, and if you want to improve it later that's fine.

Thanks. :)

Opengameart also has a cool selection of CC-BY sounds some of which might fit what you're looking for. I'd say give it a look.

*EDIT*

I found these two cool sounds for instance

http://opengameart.o...-release-sounds

http://opengameart.o...iler-sound-loop

*EDIT 2*

And these would be cool for the werebeast

The werebeast ones could be useful, as those sounds will have to be done from scratch. Thanks.

Just try and see if you can find something else that maybe useful there. They have a lot more mechanical sounds and such, but I'm not exactly familar with the nature of the currently missing sounds as I don't have TDM installed at the moment.

It would be helpful if someone else could actually look into that...it doesn't take any special skills or knowledge to look at D3 and compare it to existing sounds.

Important is the volume! Normalize the sounds so that they have the same sound volume as the old ones please!

You got me. It was my 227th go. (j/k)

I've uploaded another set of sounds for the elevator/generator/light hum: https://soundcloud.c...one-replacement

Interested to know if you think the generator is "in the ballpark" (I'm fairly happy the others are). To my ears the D3 generator is quite Star-Trekky/futuristic - I looked around for something similar with no success so I ended up using the sound of an actual diesel generator.

Those all sound great! Thanks so much. I'll add them to SVN today and then update the list of needed sounds.

Really glad they sound OK.

@Sotha - I listened to the original sounds in DR, hunted around on Freesound until I found one or more sounds that sounded similar and then did some editing in Cool Edit 2000 or Audacity (mainly trimming & normalizing, maybe some basic filtering to boost or cut some frequencies). For the elevator door sounds I mixed an old elevator door with a heavy slamming metal door to make it more like the original.

BTW, all the source sounds for these are licensed under the Creative Commons 0 License - i.e. public domain - so no need to give credits (but I may drop them a line just to let them know anyway).

Which is the one that needs replacing? (Or do they all need replacing?)

I don't know...I didn't generate that list.

Btw, we should make sure to sign up for sounds so we don't overlap...I was about to look into the machine hums too. :)

Thanks BD, that's really encouraging (and reassuring). I do feel a bit hamstrung by not having a studio, so I'm limited to copyright-free sounds I can find on the internet, but freesound has done the job so far. B)

Springheel - I'm happy to carry on working on all the remaining sounds in your first post if no-one else wants to take any. The only problem is the vault_clock_ambient - I can't find it in either in DR or the D3 pak files. Which folder is it in?

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
