Vanilla FMs

Hey all - recently started messing with TDM editing again - I'm a long ways off from finishing anything, but I wondered - are players OK with vanilla missions that use only stock resources from TDM? I'm not much for creating new textures models or devising new scripting or anything like that, but I'd love to make a small mission that only uses basic TDM stuff.

Guess I'm not really asking if that's OK, but maybe instead how it's viewed. Is that just too boring or dull for players, do you expect more than that from a new mission at this point in TDM's life cycle?

I think the majority of missions use only stock resources for TDM. I doubt anyone but the devs can even tell the difference.

There are places where it is nice to vary the defaults (door opening sounds, vocal sets, AI heads and skins, etc) but beyond that I doubt anyone cares.

I am perfectly fine with it (although "stock resources" is also a gradually increasing category since there are new assets in every update).

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

Good heavens no! Definitely not dull. In fact small missions made of TDM stock assets would be just great. We could use more stuff like Trapped! and Too Late. After this unusual contest there will be many new strange odd missions, and people will be delighted to see missions close to the Basic Core gameplay: the Good Stuff.

The stock assets are very capable! Go for it.

It's always awesome when we get a new builder and see their style.

Small stock missions are our bread & butter too.

They're fun for players wanting a quick jaunt, and they're great for mappers to learn the ropes.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

I guess the most important thing about every FM is that it is enjoyable. It does not matter what stuff you've used to create your map, as long as it's fun (what's IMHO mainly a consequence of good gameplay).

FM's: Builder Roads, Old Habits, Old Habits Rebuild

Mapping and Scripting: Apples and Peaches

Sculptris Models and Tutorials: Obsttortes Models

My wiki articles: Obstipedia

Texture Blending in DR: DR ASE Blend Exporter

I take it you already know about Fidcal's A-Z Tutorial, right?

Standard advice people give a lot is to start contest sized for a first FM, like 10-15 "rooms".

But maybe you already have an idea in mind.

Remember we're all here in the Editing Forum to help if you have questions too.

That's the whole point of the mod, to give mappers the resources to create their own missions. :)

If you feel like making your own textures go for it, but I don't think anyone expects each mission to use newly created textures.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

There's nothing wrong with missions that stick to stock assets. The more missions we have to play, the better. Also, not having to create lots of custom assets means your mission can feature even better gameplay or a more expansive environment because you have more time to focus on that. :)

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
