Dark Radiant export to OBJ file format

G'morning fellows,

I recently tested out the exporting feature of DarkRadiant in which you can export brushwork to an external file in obj format.

It worked nicely but while importing in 3ds max I only get white brushes with the texture coordinates on them. The material itself is not delivered.

Am I doing something wrong and was someone able to export her / his map with the materials applied on the brushes?

Exporting only with the texture coords would mean that I'd have to search and apply each texture by hand to the brushes again which makes the obj exporting feature pretty useless in my eyes :(

its in the scripts tab, export ase

the obj version in the file tab doesn't seem to work.

you might also need the new version of the ase_export.py file as it gets rid of a failure 'to save faces in the correct order' bug.

Why would you want to go from DR to modeling software? The usual workflow goes just the opposite direction.

Whatever you can create in DR, you can create in much more detail with the modeling software like blender.

This is the reason why people probably have been reluctant to write an importer.

You have to make sure that the obj file is referring to the right places. If you export as obj (same with ase), the texture paths are written in the file so they are exact for usage in TDM. If you open the file in 3Dmax, the programm may search for the textures in its install folder. In ase files the texture paths are relative, so not the complete path is stored.

I don't know 3Dmax, but maybe there is a way to change the path the programm is looking up the shaders, or you have to extract and copy the whole bunch to your 3Dmax folder.

Maybe someone who works with 3Dmax, too can help you out here if that doesn't work.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
