Is it possible to play Dark Mod effectively with a game controller?

Hello all!

I noticed the Dark Mod getting a mention in a Reddit thread and saw this guy:

He says he's disabled and is wondering if the Dark Mod keys could be mapped onto a controller for easier play for him.

I don't have a controller anymore so I can't find out for myself so thought I'd ask. :-X

I was doing this just a few days ago. I was playing TDM on a laptop connected to a TV with a gamepad. I use Linux and I have a config that maps the buttons on the gamepad to the mouse and keyboard. The right stick acts as the mouse, and the left acts as WASD. This is not perfect, because the left is not analog and you are either moving, or still. This means you have to bind another key to creep/move slowly. Its pretty playable, but you will have one or two actions that can't "fit" on the controller due to lack of buttons. It would be nice to do a double-mapped config where holding X and using the D-pad cycles weapons/inventory, but just using the D-pad causes you to lean. This would save buttons.

Then again, you can just get a controller with a sh**load of buttons. Mine is a Logitech and it is basically the same as a PS2 controller.

I use a Logitech G13 gamepad, so not exactly a console controller, more like extra mappable keys with tiny joystick. I've configured it to move with the joystick and still use the mouse to look around, but you could have the joystick act as mouseview instead and use wasd keys on it.

Yeah, I was thinking of mapping the left analog stick on this controller to act as a traditional joystick and then binding that to move/strafe. That would free up the "creep" button and give me more fine control at the same time. Still, I love this config because it functions in ANY game automatically. I.e. I set the controller to mimick the mouse/kb with my traditional keys and it is "ready to go" immediately with any game.

EDIT: Here's my config if anybody wants it. I submitted this a long time ago and I'm glad I did because I needed to re-implement it the other day. http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/11723-linux-users-control-tdm-any-any-game-with-a-gamepad-like-this/page__hl__gamepad__fromsearch__1

Just install the xserver-xorg-input-joystick package, stick the text in my above link in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/(whatever)joystick.conf. Then plug in your gamepad and rock out!

I use an Xbox 360 controller to play Thief 1, 2 & TDM and it works amazingly well, especially with Thief 1 & 2 including analog joystck movement. I think TDM would benefit well from analog controller support in future builds. The Thief games are perfect for a good controller, imo. For FPS shooters, a mouse & keyboard (or mouse & controller) are still best though.

I've been playing Dark Mod with a controller for a while now using a program called Pinnacle Game Profiler. Absolutely amazing piece of software if you want to use a controller in games that don't natively support it.

If anyone is interested, I could share my configuration for TDM.

I have a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick, is there a way to configure it to work? I am new to this game and modifying computers. BTW, does Mod( in TDM) stand for modification? Are there guns in any of the levels?

TDM used to be a Doom 3 Mod, but these days we're standalone.

You can call me Phi, Numbers, Digits, Ratio, 16, 1618, or whatever really, as long as it's not Phil.

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
