Help! DarkRadiant 1.8.0 x64 Crashing on Start

As topic says succinctly, Dark Radiant has suddenly started crashing on start up, during the loading process.

It dies at the point where the loading bar states: Initialising Module: XML Registry

I have uninstalled DR and the problem is still persisting.

This has literally happened out of the blue, everything was running perfectly this afternoon, any ideas?

A thought that came to mind...only if you're running a traditional hard drive. Could be a bad sector on the drive that's getting written to repeatedly.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the software probably doesn't fix it because without doing a defrag in between uninstall/reinstall, the data is getting written right back to the same open area of the drive. Run a checkdisk -R to mark bad sectors so the drive won't write to them. Start > Computer > right click the offending drive > select properties > Tools tab > Error-checking section > Check Now button > select both boxes -Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors > Start.

You may have to reboot if this is also your OS drive. Also, if its a large disk it will take a while. Like, 750GB will probably take 4-6hours.

Its also possible that DR doesn't remove your personal settings when you uninstall. E.g. the files in question under your profile. It may keep these so when you reinstall it retains your settings.

You will lose all your settings in DR but you can uninstall DR first, and then go to the profile folder under C:/Users/<yourName>/AppData/Roaming/DarkRadiant/ and just delete the DR folder there.

Then reinstall. This is the faster option.

It is more likely a software/corrupt file issue but when something like this occurs, its also good to know whether your drive may be dying as I've had this issue before with spinning hard drives.

I would try the software solution first. Then check the disk if that doesn't work.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
