A Game of Thrones Inspired FM and Potential Legal Issues

I was thinking of making a TDM FM that was inspired by Game of Thrones. However, I don't want to spend months working on this only to find out that it can't be officially supported by TDM. Based on my understanding of of how TDM handled the legal issues with Eidos, things like names of characters and places are intellectual property and cannot be used eg Garrett and Hammers. The FM in question would take place at Castle Black and you would play the role of John Snow so I would be making the following changes:

  • Castle Black - Castle Dark
  • The Nights Watch - The Dark Watch
  • John Snow - Jason Frost
  • The Crows - The ravens
  • The White Walkers - The Snow Walkers.

Also I do not think that my mapping skills are good enough to create an exact replica of Castle Black ( I'm not even going to attempt to build The Wall. That would be a garanteed Performance nightmare in TDM) there will most likely be a lot of simularities. Would this also cause any potential problems? In the FM release thread if I stated that "This FM is inspired by game of Thrones, not based on." would that clear up any potential problems?

Please advise. Many thanks

I can't help with any legal advice, but I just have to say that this has me very excited. Your fan missions are great, and Game of Thrones is easily the best show ever created. The combination of my favorite game and my favorite show being made by a great mapper... Exciting stuff! I hope it works out.

You could put an elevator 'inside' the wall...just an ice shaft to ride up. Then have a fog layer just below the top of the wall, in a room at the top of the elevator shaft, which would hide everything below. Similarly, have a fog layer above the castle, obscuring the (pretend) wall from view.

If AI could be re-sized, you could make a dwarf, pissing off the edge.

It is perfectly okay to take inspiration from other works.

Don't copy anything. Refrain from making silly close-enough name conversions. Make your own character. Don't call them "white walkers" or make silly conversions to "snow walkers", which sounds like guys walking with the silly shoes. Just call then zombies or undead.

Just look at the geometry seen in GoT and make your own stuff. Don't make any direct replicas. Castles are usually pretty similar to each other.

Just take inspiration and make your own work. It is that simple.

As for the performance, you know the limitations of the doom3 engine. Outside areas can be faked like I did in LQD opening scene. With a good skybox you could easily fake a location similar to the Wall.

After spending a few minutes experimenting, I can say the following item is going to be a pain in the ass to make, if you want to do it any justice.

LOL!

Task is not so much to see what no one has yet seen but to think what nobody has yet thought about that which everybody see. - E.S.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
