Synology DSM 5.0: Heads up

To any fellow synology users,

 

Do NOT Upgrade to DSM 5 for the time being as it is broken! (a bit like Windows 8.1 update 1, thats been breaking user installations)

 

I own a Synology DS213 and I upgraded to DSM 5 on the 05/03/14. I have been on a support call that started on the phone and now via email for over a month now and Synology UK cant fix the particular issue I have. In my case " entri.cgi" is constantly using way more CPU time that is should eb doing causing the nas to be slow and laggy. And this is despite DSM_5.0_4488 being the second update since DSM 5.0 was released where the 'entri.cgi' issue was suppesedly fixed.

1. Did a straight update to DSM_DS213_4458_update_2 from DSM 5.0 original update - entri.cgi still using cpu time.
   
2. Using Synology assistant I reset the nas to default and then updated to DSM_DS213_4458_update_2 - entri.cgi still using cpu time.
   
3. Using Synology assistant I reset the nas to default & wiped the hard drives and then updated to DSM_DS213_4458_update_2 - entri.cgi still using cpu time.
   

I had enabled Telnet/SSH & remote support and opened up the required ports on the nas and my router, but while waiting these last weeks for Synology Uk support to get their act together and remote in I discovered that a bunch of IP's originating in china trying to gain access to the synology box.

 

Support calls for DSM 5.0 have overloaded Synology UK phone line "01908 274 659" as early as the 28/03/14 because they dont pickup anymore and instead you get an automated message.

 

On the subject of the new DSM 5.0 interface it suffers from the same bullshit that iOS 7.1, Office 2013 and windows 8 are afflicted with - the dumbing down, pastely low colour, fisherprice interface.

 

So in summary, if your using DSM 4.3 stay with it for now.
