How do you make a simple sign show text

I have an entity: small gui sign and in the text editor I named it Sign1, and have it set to 1 page, and chose marble small gui, but when I go into game it's blank. I must be missing something?

It all looks correct in the editor, and I can see the text in the editor? The other readabels work fine? Any suggestions? Thanks buck...

I'm not sure what your existing set up is as I've not come across any entities with a name similar to that... But for sign text and words on flat surfaces generally, where you want the player to read the text off the wall or sign in game instead of seeing a pop-up readable in the HUD, you can use a simple transparent patch (i.e. a decal) over the sign. There's no need to use the readable editor or an xdata file. You can put the text in a spawnarg. It's described in detail in this wiki article, but it's easy to try out without reading through all the config information there. You right-click on orthoview > insert prefab > prefabs > readables > sign text decals and choose a font. You get a blue square in DR with the words "entity gui" on it. You stretch that over the where you want to words to be, then set the gui1_parm1 spawnarg to what you want the text to say:

In game, you don't see the blue rectangle, you just see your text, so you can put it over whatever surface texture you want.

@ SteveL

Thank you. I will try that tonight. I just thought that it would be as easy as the other readables.

I have read the above wiki article, but I never know if what I'm reading , is still current, or has been superceded.

Thanks again...

If you find anything superseded, please post about it! The beauty of a wiki is it's fast to change, easily updated, and records legacy info (including times of such). The wiki info should be more current than older forum posts, as the forum posts don't get revised when new changes become available.

One thing I've been tackling is seeing repeatedly asked about processes in the forums, and adding those step-by-steps or tutorials to appropriate articles or clarifying what is already there if people have ended up turning to the forums.

It was easier back when I was new to editing, as I was scrounging for all the info I could get through all venues, harder now that I don't go seeking things as much, hence my keeping an eye on what newer folks are getting tripped up by.

@RJFerret

Several things have foundered me in learning this mapping process. I started with Fidcal's , learn in one day, tutorial. It is excellent and thanks to his effort. However, several things have been improved on since then, and it is easy for a newbie to go down the wrong track and get put on a dead siding... Readables, Sounds; to name a couple. Also, my first map attempt was foiled because Visportals was mentioned almost last, and newbies must realize the importance of them, and do them as you go, will be the best way to handle them. Thanks to you guys in this forum for all of your help. It won't be long now, and I will be asking for Beta testers.

Thanks, buck

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
